Along with other passengers, Captain Cline brought along a shipment of French-grown Arabica beans. In 1838, Colonel Timothy Burton acquired some of the first land in what would become Hilliard and began growing coffee trees. By 1840, Burton had opened two cafes: The Bean Bistro at 1280 State Street (now called The Bean) and The Wheatsheaf at 418 Main Street (now called Dutch Bros.). Soon after opening these stores, Burton developed an intense rivalry with local grocery store owner Amos Stroud which ultimately led to their closure in 1847. During this time period many of the factors that contributed to the growth of artisan coffee were becoming more prevalent in America; such as technological advancements which made it easier for farmers to produce quality beans at lower cost; increased access to capital due to financial instability during the antebellum period; and increased demand from consumers who were becoming increasingly sophisticated about their food choices and wanted more than just commodity products. As a result of these changes health concerns became a greater focus for many American entrepreneurs who saw new opportunities for innovation within various industries while also catering towards different segments of society - an approach that was soon picked up by Europeans as well. Hilliard, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The population was 14,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in southern Mahoning County on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. The first permanent settler in what would become Hilliard was John Clayson in 1810. He established a cabin on the Scioto River and named it Clayson's Ferry after himself and his brother-in-law, James Clayson. In 1830, Hiram Stevens founded a gristmill here and began to produce flour for local markets. By 1840, he had built two other mills here - one for cornmeal and another for cottonseed oil - which were linked by railroad tocleaning plants in Springfield Township on the south side of the river. The manufacturing sector dominated Hilliard during its early years, but this changed beginning around 1870 when Hilliard became an important transportation hub foreurowards as well as exports to ports such as Cleveland and Cincinnati. In 1881–82, construction began on what would become Hilliard Municipal Airport; it opened in 1923 with three runways (runway 10/18 was added later). During World War II, production at several local companies turned to war materials such as aluminum alloy used by military aircraft manufacturers; these operations ended soon afterward because of wartime restrictions on emissions from factories. The post-war boom brought new prosperity to Hilliard through commercial development: In 1957, construction began on what would become Nationwide Drive; this led to incorporation as a city in 1959 followed by annexation by Dayton earlier that year.
