In 1814, the Navy established a Military District of Cincinnati which included Hamilton County. This area served as training ground for naval crews until 1861 when the district was disbanded. From 1861-1865, The United States Naval Forces Europe (USNFE) operated out of NAS Cincinnati. This branch of the navy performed various duties such as providing logistical support for American troops fighting abroad. During this time, gifts from citizens of Hamilton County were sent to USNFE headquarters at Portsmouth, Virginia for storage and eventual shipment back home to America. In 1865, NAS Cincinnati was decommissioned and its assets sold off piecemeal to other navies around the country. The last ship stationed at NAS Cincinnati was decommissioned in 1969 and its assets sold off too. Today, there are no active warships stationed in Hamilton County but that doesn’t mean there isn’t military history associated with it!
