The area that would become Hamilton was then part of the Wyandot Indian Nation until it ceded its land to the British Crown in 1794. After becoming an independent republic in 1801, Hamilton joined Confederation with other states forming the United States of America on July 4, 1804. As part of this process, all white males over 21 were required to swear an oath to support US ideals and principles before being allowed to vote. Hamilton's history can be traced back to two principal periods: pre-colonial period (1688-1763) and colonial period (1763-1812). During the pre-colonial period (1688–1763), people from nearby Wyandotte Native American tribe hunted and fished in what is today known as Orchard Township on Lake Erie's southern shoreline. They also gathered plants and trees for their own use which they traded with local tribes along the Maumee River valley east of present day Cincinnati; these operations are believed to have been one of the earliest examples of village development in North America. In 1793–94 when Ohio became a state within the new United States of America following ratification by Congress under President George Washington, settlers began moving into what would become Hamilton from surrounding counties including Trumbulls, Licking and Medina Counties as well as parts of Stark County up river from Cincinnati proper where much later Fort Warren would be built adjacent to Great Miami Creek—a key route for trade betweenOhio’s many settlements and BritishCanada’s major portage point on Lake Ontario near Niagara Falls.).
