The town was founded by James Hamilton in 1814 as a trading post on the Muskingum River. In 1825, it became a local government village under the name of Athens-Clarkeville. In 1829, it became a city with a charter from Congress and was named for General George Washington Hamilton, one of America's most accomplished generals and first Secretary of War under President James K. Polk (1849–53). Hamilton, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio that dates back to 1813. It was founded by James Hamilton, a surveyor and landowner who also served as Mayor of Cincinnati from 1835-1837. The town was named after Hamilton's father, John Hamilton. In 1847, the town became the county seat of Hamilton County. It retains its role as the county seat to this day. The first settler in what is now Hamilton was Nicholas Fenton who arrived in 1796. He built a cabin on the present site of the current Community Center in 1800. By 1807, there were nine or ten families living in what is now Hamilton. The Village Green Act of 1800 authorized Henry Clay to lay out 3 square miles (10 km²) east and north of downtown Cincinnati for settlements called "Villages". These would be developed into townships with one vote each and be governed by an elected board known as a Committee on Storehouses and Roads. In 1837, when James Auld became Mayor of Cincinnati, he recommended thatHamilton be renamed "Hamilton" because "the name had lately been usedby several gentlemen hereabouts with good success." On May 28th, 1840, voters approved resolution #1 appointing Trustees for erection of said village hall and other public works therein; provided such Trustees should have power “to make all regulations necessary for carrying into effect” said Resolution No 2 passed two weeks previous by unanimous vote of both Houses assembled:—thus giving birth to our present community hall which stands today at corner Main & Third Streets.—An act bearing date November 4th following made it perfectly legal for any person or corporation whatsoever to erect anywhere within this limits any building or structure not exceeding Thirty feet wide × Twenty feet deep x Eighteen feet high without first obtaining written consent from certain trustees appointed pursuant thereto.—A deed having been executed by Wm Higginson Esq., Presiding Justice thereof on December 12th aforesaid authorizing such building notwithstanding protestations previously received from some citizens thereof relative to its size; it may still stand today at corner Main & Third Streets!
