Grove City, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area. Grove City is located in Summit County on the edge of Lake Erie, about south of Cleveland and east of Akron. It has a total area of , all land. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grove City were French traders in 1688 who named it "L'Isle Royale" after their ship ran into trouble off the coast of Canada and lost its crew while exploring for new land. The English explorer John Law found and mapped much of what is now Ohio during his trip from Detroit to Canton in 1795; Law gave the name L'Isle Royale to what he called "the termination or mouth" of Great Lakes River which he had discovered and named "Cleveland." The first permanent white settler in what is now Grove City was Nicholas Huyck (1785–1847), an early investor in real estate development in Cleveland. He built a cabin near present day First Hill Road and Main Street on Sisson's Island, which later became known as Huyck Park within city limits. In 1814 he married Anna Maria Stowe (died 1892), daughter of Daniel Stowe (1772–1837). they moved to Springfield Township where they raised children before moving back to Cleveland in 1825 when Nicholas was appointed Surveyor General for Cuyahoga County under President James Krieger Sr.. They lived there until their death except for one year living briefly with her brother Benjamin Fisk (1800–1872) on Euclid Avenue next door to Howard University where AnnaMaria taught mathematics beginning December 12th, 1828! Their only surviving son Benjamin Fisk Jr., born December 2nd 1830 died unmarried at age 78 years old on May 10th 1888 after spending most his life working for Griggs & Shoe Manufacturing Company that produced shoes for western farmers!
