Grove City, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio that was founded in 1814. The town became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century and today it remains a popular tourist destination. Grove City is located on the west bank of the Muskingum River, about 20 miles north of Cleveland. The first settlers to Grove City were farmers who arrived in 1814. They built their homes around a mill which they named "New Beginnings." In 1828, John A. Groves purchased land east of present-day Grove City from William H. Knight and began to build a log cabin which he named "Grove Hall." By 1830, Groves had erected four more log cabins, each containing a total of 12 rooms and 6 bathrooms. In 1835, Groves married Lydia Tuttle and moved his family to Grove City from Lima, Ohio where he had been living since 1800. Under Groves' leadership, Grove City became one of the most important manufacturing centers in Ohio during the 19th century. He developed a successful textile business and invested heavily in railroads which allowed him to export his products nationwide. During this time, Grove City also emerged as one of America's leading cultural destinations with its renowned museums and theaters. In 1916, Groves donated $30 million to help finance World War I efforts and later served as president of Dow Jones & Company Incorporated (now Time Warner). In 1932, he sold his share in Dow Jones & Company for $2 billion ($100 million at current prices). This gave him increased wealth which enabled him to support many charitable causes throughout his life.
