Grove City, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Butler County. The population was 11,828 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Scioto River upstream from Cincinnati. The town was platted in 1814 by George Grove and Donaldson Grove, brothers who also founded Cincinnati. The first post office was established in 1815. In 1830, Grove City became a part of what is now Cincinnati through an Act of Congress passed under President James K. Polk as part of the Compromise of 1850 between Great Britain and United States over disputes over slavery and states' rights to their citizens' property within those borders. The original buildings which remain today in downtown Grove City were built between 1830 and 1840 by David Lillis, one of three men who founded Cincinnati's first Bank (the others being John B Anthony and Jeremiah Green). David Lillis had come to America from England with his family when he was just sixteen years old, after working for his father as a laborer on a farm near Oxford, England. He arrived in Cincinnati in 1823 as head clerk for First National Bank (later renamed First National Banking Company), serving until 1829 when he became general manager and president of that company's successor bank, the American Trust Company (a predecessor to Huntington Banks). In 1835–36 he served as commissioner with responsibility for finance under Mayor Amos Kendall during Cleveland's mayoral campaign against Samuel Adams; after Adams’ win, Lillis retired from politics but kept his role at American Trust until his death in 1861 aged seventy-six years old.* In 1865 General William Tecumseh Sherman won an important battle at Fallen Timbers outside present-day Dayton while retreating from Battle Creek Campaign; due to this victory Union forces moved rapidly southward along the Scioto River towards Columbus; they reached Grove City on October 12th†(*), establishing control over much of central Ohio including much earlier than planned* [*See map below]. By 1870 there were only five small towns left within territorial boundaries defined by the Treaty of Paris ceding claims to Michigan Territory following its war with Canada: these were all assigned new names – †Thatcherstown (1870), West Chesterfield Township (1871), East Liverpool Township (1872), Delaware Township (1873) – reflecting their new national status* [*For more information see "Grove City Timeline" included within this article]. A few years later developers began purchasing land around downtown where they would build high-rise apartments or large warehouses before development died down again throughout most of the 20th century†(*). Grove City, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern part of the United States. It is located on the edge of Sandusky County, about 20 miles southwest of Cleveland and 30 miles northeast of Akron. The population was 9,452 at the 2010 census. Grove City has been home to a Methodist congregation since 1825 and to other denominations since the 1830s. In 1925, Grove City became an urban community when it annexed parts of nearby Mayfield Heights. Grove City began as a farming village in 1825 on land that had been purchased by Methodists from Native Americans. John Witherspoon, one of America's most influential preachers, served as pastor there from 1827 to 1830. In 1830, Grove City became an independent town under the name Westville after its incorporation into Sandusky County. A new post office was established in 1831; it remained in operation until 1902. The first church in Grove City was built on Main Street in 1825; it replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire. The first minister who served there was Rev George Whitehurst (died 1850). There were also two other churches before eventually being replaced by one large structure which still stands today—the First Methodist Church (1829) and First Baptist Church (1875). The first school in Grove City was built on Elm Street in 1828; it continued to be operated until 1906. A second school opened on Green Road east of Elm Street some time later but closed due to financial problems shortly thereafter. In 1865, Reverend James Millington Sargent founded what is now known as Sargent College—the only college west of Philadelphia open to people without a university degree at that time.—and soon afterwards moved his student body into what is now known as Old Campus Square adjacent to his original sermon hall on High Street between Second and Third Streets.—Sargent College would remain open for over half a century before becoming a full-fledged university with its own main campus near downtown Cleveland.—The development aroundOld Campus Square included numerous homes and businesses which continue to stand today including Sargent Hall—the largest remaining academic building erected during those years—as well as several smaller buildings such as Mrs.[Fanny] Dixon’s School Annexe which still serves as a daycare center for children living within walking distance of Old Campus Square.—A number of additional structures were added over time including President Fenton’s House (1907), Masonic Temple No 1 (1912), German Evangelical Lutheran Synagogue (1915), Presbyterian Episcopal Church Of America Building (1920), Florida Baptist Convention Building No 2(1965)—all while continuing to serve primarily as residences for presidents and faculty members.—During World War II much activity took place within Old Campus Square which served both military bases camped nearby or used by local authorities such as Law Enforcement Officers barracks and Civilian Defense Headquarters]} Three brick walls remain standing today associated with these wartime periods: One wall memorializes soldiers killed during World War I who are buried at Soldiers' National Cemetery south side [of town]; another wall marks the location where gas rationing began following World War II across ZIP Code 49623; finally, anotherwall commemorates local firefighters who died during the 1967 Torrington Hills Fire
