Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Cuyahoga County and is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greenville is home to The Gale Research Company, one of the largest chemical companies in North America, as well as two major research universities: Ohio State University and Cleveland State University. The first European settlers in what would become Greenville were French colonists who arrived in 1795 and named it Point du Salut after an Italian point they had seen while traveling through this area on their way to Canada. They built a trading post there which served as a center for fur trade with Native Americans until 1814 when British forces occupied PointduSalut and closed all access to the sea shorelines around present-day Greenville due to fears that American traders might buildTrade posts on land that now includes much of northeastern Ohio (the so-called Great Lakes Region). In 1815, United States troops drove away British forces from PointduSalut, reopened access to point (and nearby Fort Pitt), and renamed it Greenville with its new location 150 miles south in central Ohio.. The town was officially founded by George Warton on October 14, 1825 when he platted what would become downtown Greenville from parcels acquired from several small villages near his original trading post at "Village Neck". At first only single family dwellings were developed; later a commercial district became centered around Warton's Hotel/Bank which still stands today as one of downtown's most conspicuous landmarks. During its early years, Greensville experienced heavy shipping traffic caused by river inspections along both banks of the Scioto River upstream from where present day Main Street runs

Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Greene County. As of 2010, the population was 27,521. The city is located on the southern border of Greene County and is bordered by Trumbull County to the east and southwest, Muskingum County to the northwest and west, and Butler County to the north. The downtown area has been called "the cultural and commercial heart" of Greenville for over a century. The first Europeans to come to Greenville were Shawnees from Illinois who established a point on what is now Water Street in 1813. A post office was established in 1815, and after about twenty years growth began as people started trading with other parts of Ohio including Kentucky and Indiana which lay beyond its borders at that time. The name "Greenville" was chosen because it had green fields near it which made it attractive to early settlers as they could see evidence that this place had once been an orchard before being taken over by trees. In 1827, when Captain James Ketchum surveyed part of Greene County he named it Ketchum Township after himself while also naming several other nearby townships such as Parma Heights, Northfield Heights and West Bloomfield Hills after friends or family members who aided him during his surveying expedition In 1830 two brothers named John Dickson founded what would become Dickson Paper Company just south of downtown Greenville where today's Third Street meets Market Street There were many paper companies until 1970 when Stroud Paper Company merged into Dow Corning Corporation One important event that helped start Greenville's economic development occurred when riverboats began landing passengers at what are now First Avenue (now Elm) Boulevard between Delaware Avenue (now Broadway)and High Street in 1838 followed by steamboats arriving soon thereafter After becoming a town in 1841 due largely to support from publisher Amos Kendall local merchants formed an association known as The Steuben Trustee Society which purchased land near present day Third Street Cemetery for a new town square/marketplace where trade guilds met each week for goods distribution before embarking back upriver on their boats bound for Cincinnati Dow Corning Corporation moved into their current facilities on Elm street just east of Broadway around 1909-10 This company became one of America's largest engineering firms specializing in control products used throughout World War II including radar equipment , air traffic control systems , nuclear reactors etc With increasing competition within industry during this era different companies relocated or merged taking much talent with them along with their plants across the country Some notable mergers during this time include IBM subsidiary Lucent Technologies Inc., Honeywell International Co., Danaher Corp., Eaton Electric Corporation
Greenville was platted in 1815 as a village in the Scioto Valley by John Green and others. The first post office was established in 1821, and the townspeople voted to create a city on May 5, 1825. The original name of the city was Xenia, but it was changed to Greenville on November 3, 1829 after Ohio Gov. George Washington Carver became its first mayor. The City of Cleveland annexed part of Greenville on February 17, 1902.
