In 1950, Congress created an all-volunteer Army Reserve Force called The Ohio National Guard Bureau (ONGB). It is part of the Columbus–Middletown metropolitan area. The name "Greenville" originated from two grants given to settlers by General Andrew Jackson: one in 1812 and another in 1815. The first grant called for 300 acres (1 km2) of land east of what is now downtown Greenville; this became known as Grant's Point after Major General James Grant acquired it from local pioneer Nathaniel Banks. The town was founded on December 11, 1800, when a group of farmers led by Timothy Pickering bought 2,000 acres (10 km2) north of present-day Greenville from Nicholas Sassoon for $5 per acre ($/km²). On March 12, 1801 – just days after United States President George Washington's inauguration – Pickering sold 1,500 acres (50 km2) to Captain John Dyer for $10/acre ($/km²). In 1802 Dyer donated 5acres (20 m²), or about . This parcel became known as East Towne because it adjoined Grant's Point on the eastern side of town. Greenville, Ohio was founded by the Ohio Company in 1796. The company built a sawmill and grist mill on the Scioto River and named it Greenville after George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1928, the Dayton Manufacturing Company merged with American Tobacco Company (ATC) and became one of five divisions of ATC known as "The Apalachicola Division." That year, Greenville became an incorporated city. The following year, ATC changed its name to Philip Morris Companies Incorporated and continue operations as part of that organization until its collapse in 1991. Greenville has maintained a strong manufacturing industry throughout its history. Its leading companies have included American Bicycles (founded 1865), General Electric (1892), Dow Chemical Co., Philips Electronics Co., Owens-Illinois Corporation, United States Rubber Works (1912-1967), Alcoa (1935-1964), Wacker Group AG (), Reynolds American Incorporated (), PPG Industries Ltd (), Burris Firearms Holdings Inc (). "Manufacturing account for more than 60% of total employment in town at current levels," according to 2010 census data cited in "Greenville: America’s Popular Outfitters", published by Heritage Foundation Press/University Park Press in 2011. "Today’s [manufacturing] base is based largely on new technologies such as 3D printing and digital fabrication." Today's [manufacturing] base is also increasingly focused on global markets through production teams located abroad."
Greenville was founded in 1796 by Captain James A. Ross as a small trading post on the Scioto River. The first town site was chosen due to its central location, and it rapidly grew into a thriving community with a population of around 100 people in 1802. By 1830, Greenville had become an important seaport for the region and attracted Merchants and other businessmen from all over the Ohio Valley. In 1835, Greenville became the seat of local government when it was moved from Xenia to Greenville following the annexation of that city by Ohio. In 1837, Greenville absorbed the neighboring town of Xenia into its community and continued to grow until it reached its peak population of 1,500 people in 1850. However, during the Panic of 1857-58, which plagued much of eastern Ohio, Greenville experienced significant economic decline and lost most of its residents throughout that decade. It declined further after 1860 until it ceased to exist as an entity within Ohio altogether in 1870.
