Greenville is a city located in the southwestern corner of Ohio, on the border with Kentucky. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Growth continued throughout much of Territorial days as various entrepreneurs created businesses including grist mills, wagon transportation companies, lumberyards and cotton plantations; but during Reconstruction efforts by Confederate forces to take control of Ohio Territory following its secession from the United States (1861), violence resulted in more than 100 civilian deaths and thousands injured across most of south central Ohio during what came to be known as "The Great Terror". When Union troops invaded southernOhioin April 1863 they found numerous abandoned townsfolk hiding inside churches or other buildings awaiting their fate; within hours many had been killed or captured by Confederate forces who proceeded to burn all evidence incriminating themselves before dumping bodies around town like so much trash while slaveowners paraded off into freedom content knowing their Negroes had been liberated without cost or bloodshed...the end result being one of history’s greatest ironies that Union soldiers burned down cities controlled by Confederates just as those same citizens were voting to rejoin America under new leadership less than two months later! Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. The population was 939 at the 2010 census, ranking it as the 15th most populous city in Ohio. Greenville was founded by planters in 1788 following land grants from George Washington. The town became a port on the Scioto River, becoming an important transportation node for goods heading to Cincinnati and other eastern cities during the early nineteenth century. The town's prominence declined during the Progressive Era, with jobs moving to larger cities during that time period; however, Greenville has experienced resurgence in recent years as a bedroom community for Cleveland and Cincinnati. The first Europeans to visit what is now Greenville were French colonists who landed there in 1788 after sailing downriver from Fort Miami on Lake Erie. They named their new settlement La Salle because of its possessor, Jean-Baptiste La Salle, captain of a French ship called Le Dauphin which had made landfall on July 4th, 1786 near modern day Dayton (). La Salle had sailed up from Montreal along what is now Interstate 71 and been lost at sea while exploring some unknown shoals off shore when he sighted land about four miles (6 km) offshore his original landfall point according to one source (). In 1801, United States forces burned down part of La Salle's plantation complex as punishment for his defiance of American authorities; this event is also recognized as one of America's earliest acts of terrorism (). In 1802–1803 Wm Brown built two small log houses on what is now Main Street (), one being used as a public school building until 1835 (); later that year he started construction on what would become Greenville Normal School () which served elementary students through high school until 1911 when it became University Avenue High School . In 1807 John Painter constructed a frame house (now known as State House) at 527 Main Street (), then village hall before moving into his present home there in 1840 (). During the 1830s another settlements developed around what are today West Sixth Street (), East Fourth Street () and North Third Street (); these communities were collectively called Whitehall Township (). When Lancaster County was created from parts of Hamilton County in 1800, Whitehall Township fell within that county but continued to be administered by Hamilton County officials until November 1st 1800 when all township functions were transferred effective with creation of Lawrence County . On November 1st 1800 Whitehall Township effectively ceased to exist due to its size making it difficult for farmer proprietors or officials representing them to bargain effectively with neighboring counties over rights-of-way or services offered ; this event is also recognized as one of America's earliest instances where municipalities completely surrendered their authority over portions of their respective counties .)
