Green, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Green were David and Deborah Laughlin who arrived around 1796. They named their land "Laughing Meadows." In 1802, John Ritchie and his family moved to Green from their home in Delaware Township. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and new trade routes through central Ohio, businesses began to grow in Green. By 1830, much of what is now Butler County had been organized as townships within Butler County. On December 12th of that year, Green became one of these townships with a population of five hundred residents. The Town Square was built on the intersection of Elm and High Streets circa 1830-1831 by James Cranch for himself and his wife Esther (Fenn). Mrs. Cranch donated most if not all of her personal estate to be used for this project which she also supervised from start to finish. The cornerstone was laid on November 26th, 1830 by Drury Ewing with assistance from architect Elijah Howe; both men are buried there at Elm Street Cemetery together with their families member Mrs. Cranch’s father-in-law Jno.. In 1850 when Green became an independent township it adopted its present name “Green” after General George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate near Alexandria Virginia where he resided while president during the early 1800s….In 1912 when Green became part of Cleveland Municipal Corporation it changed its name back to “Green” once again…..Today many people know Greene simply as "the city" or even just "Cleveland".
