In 1793, French-American Pierre Girard settled in the area now known as Girard, Ohio. He was the first European to arrive in what is now Girard County. In 1802, he erected a small cabin on his farmstead and named it after himself, "Girard's Coffee House." Pierre Girard started selling coffee from his home in 1802. By 1860, he had built a large plantation complex located near present day Toledo. In 1865, he sold his plantation to John J. Lennon and his family for $1 million dollars. The purchase represented a new peak of success for the Lennon family because they were able to control all aspects of their business empire: coffee production, marketing, shipping and retailing operations. The late 1800s saw an increase in coffee consumption throughout the United States due to advances in transportation and technology. By 1899, coffee beans had reached Europe and began being exported there as well. At this time, Girard's Coffee House became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe due to its unique atmosphere and historical significance.

In 1824, Captain Cranch married Miss Sarah Dickson and with her new income, he purchased land east of his mill for coffee production. The first cup of coffee from this new Mill was sold in October of that year.

The town has also housed the Noble County Courthouse Annex since 1968.
