Girard is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Girard County. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1812 by John Girard and post office began operation on February 14, 1813. The first settler in what is now Girard was George Burchfield, who arrived in 1800 from England with his family and built a cabin near present day Girard Lake. In 1812 Girards Major General John Fenton moved his headquarters to what became known as Fenton's Landing on the Scioto River to avoid Indians attacking settlers along the river road south ofpresent day Girard Falls. A store and tavern were built there in 1815 by Captain Jonathan Quincy and later operated by Nicholas Browning until 1830 when it was burned down by Indians under Chief Tecumseh during their invasion of Ohio that year. On July 11, 1836, following Andrew Jackson's victory over William Henry Harrison at Monongalia Creek, President Jackson ordered all Indian treaties signed since 1795 to be terminated effective September 15th due to lack of compliance In 1865 local farmer David Dreher donated land for a railroad depot which would become one of the first businesses in town On November 9th 1870 Uniontown native Nathan Bedford Forrest was elected sheriff after winning an election against incumbent Hiram Berryman Sheriff Forrest served until 1893 During World War II many residents took up arms against Japan or joined military units because they felt they had no choice After World War II much of what remained of downtown girarde closed due to economic problems while newer buildings were erected northward along I-71 . In 1990 new construction projects resulted in more than doubling the population from 1,868 people to 3,500 people within 10 years
