One of the most prominent residents of Girard was John Girard, who founded the village in 1835 as a farmstead on high ground near present-day Uniontown. In 1850, he donated 2 acres (0.8 km²) to make up what is now Girard Township. The first settler in Girard was George Butler, who arrived in 1856 and built a log cabin on his farmstead known as Butler's Grove. From this location, he developed an extensive commercial enterprise that included manufacturing goods such as shoes and feed for cattle. By 1901, there were five businesses in Girard with a combined payroll of $40,000 dollars annually. In 1917, during World War I, the Ulysses S. However, the town continued to grow until it reached its peak population in 1930 with around 10,000 residents. After that time the growth slowed and eventually stopped completely.
