Girard, Ohio is a small town in Highland County, Ohio, about 25 miles south of Toledo and 10 miles north of Dayton. Girard was founded by George Washington Girard in 1813. The present courthouse was built in 1903. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Girard became a center for agriculture and industry. The area now known as Girard was once an agricultural township that included parts of today's Highland and Ottawa counties. At one time the town had a population of around 1,500 people. However, the growth of industry and farming stopped around the turn of the century because new transportation technologies made it easier to get goods to market from east-west rather than from north-south. After World War I ended, Girard experienced a period of economic decline due to strikes by its workers at local mills. However, during the 1920s and 1930s, particular emphasis was placed on educational opportunities in Girard as part of what has been called "the Great Migration". This migration consisted mainly of African Americans who came to work in nearby Toledo or Cleveland after being released from prison or military service during World War II. Over time various businesses have located in Girard including grocery stores (Jingles Foods Inc., Supercenters), banks (First National Bank), television production companies (WKRC-TV), medical practices (The Mercy Hospital & Medical Center) and industrial plants (Cleveland Engine Company). Despite these recent changes within the community, most residents remain supportive of their village's traditional values such as small-townism and strict adherence to hunting regulations
Girard was founded in 1795 by Jean Girard, a French immigrant. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was first established. In 1803, the town was named after John Cranch, an American general and businessperson who served as military governor of Ohio from 1800 to 1804. The name change came about because at the time Girard thought the title would make him more illustrious than he already was. In1825, Girard became one of twenty-six villages in Wayne County added to the United States. On March 1, 1829, Girard became a city. That year, it had a population of 441 people and it grew to 746 people by 1830. By 1840, Girard had become an important center for trade in the region because of its location on the Great Lakes and its access to transportation routes. The city's economy changed completely during the Civil War because much production happened outside of town due to conflict elsewhere in Ohio or Indiana. By 1865, Girard's population numbered just 154 people remaining within city limits and it ceased to exist as a municipality altogether.
