Girard, Ohio is a small town located in Union Township, Stark County, Ohio. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It has been noted for its coffee beans since before the early 1800s. The first coffee house in Girard was built in 1796 by Nicholas LaBarre and his brother-in-law, Ebenezer Griggs. In 1802, John Beard established the first store in Girard and started selling coffee beans to local residents. By 1825, there were six stores operating in Girard with an average of two customers per day. By 1830, coffee had spread to other towns in Stark County and the Buckeye State and was being sold at markets throughout Ohio. In 1847, George Washington Grimes opened the first grocery store in Girard which became one of the leading retailers of coffee beans throughout the United States. By 1860, there were twelve grocery stores operating around Girard with an average of eighteen customers per day. Coffee continued to be popular across America until it began declining during World War II due to removed demand for soldiers’ rations that included caffeine-rich items like tea and coffeepots. By 1865, Girard had a population of 200 people and a school. In 1868, Girard became the seat of Napoleon Township when it was split off from Liberty Township. During the American Civil War, Girard sided with the Union side and helped protect Columbus from Confederate attack. After the war, Girard prospered as a commercial center thanks to its shipping capabilities. In 1877, Girard incorporated as a city and began to build up its infrastructure. In 1907, Girard became one of the first municipalities in Ohio to establish an urban services district to provide city-wide services such as trash collection and water hookups. In 1961, Girard annexed neighboring townships for total population growth and renamed itself as City of Girard. Since then, City of Girard has seen significant growth in both size and importance within the local community. A post office was established in 1816, and by 1830 the population had grown to over 100 people. In 1837, Girard became a village, and by 1840 it had reached its current size. The first school in Girard opened in December 1838. It was donated by Reverend John Dickey and operated for four years before being closed due to financial difficulties. The first public library was founded in 1865; it was later renamed the Cleveland Public Library after Mayor James K. Caldwell (1861-1937). In 1896, Girard became a part of the City of Cleveland; it remained an unincorporated community until 2002 when it became part of the Cleveland Heights neighborhood within the city boundaries. Today, there are few remnants of this early days – most residents now enjoy access to transportation options such as buses or cars that connect them with neighboring communities like Euclid Heights or Mayfield Heights. Despite its struggles during recent times, Girard has managed to keep pace with changing trends within its community; for example, since 2007 they have begun hosting an annual summer arts festival which features both local artists and visiting artists from around the United States. Girard was founded in 1812 by John Girard and his wife, Susanna. It was named for John's ancestor, Gabriel Girard. The Girards operated a farm until 1837 when they moved to Cincinnati. In 1870, the Girards erected the first frame house in Cincinnati. They continued to live in Cincinnati until their death in 1903.
