Girard, Ohio is a small town located in the Miami Valley region of Ohio. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Girard is part of the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Girard may come from either Jacques de Girard or Jean Baptiste de Girard which means "John the Baptist's father." The first settler in Girard was Joseph Gould who arrived in 1792. In 1802, two brothers named Amos and Nelson founded a tavern called The Gist on Main Street. In 1827, John Aiken erected a log cabin on what is now east side of Elm Street between Third and Fourth Streets. It was here that he started to farm and raise cattle. He also built a barn and other outbuildings around this time. In 1840, John French arrived in Girarde with his family and began to build a home on what is now northeast corner of Third and Fifth Streets. This house became known as French's Inn after him. By 1850, there were four businesses in Girarde including three stores and one tavern operated by residents: French's Store, Gist House Tavern, Andalusia House Hotel & Cattle Market). Families such as the Cooks settled down around Pleasant Run Creek during these years which led to its nickname "The happiest creek in America." Children would play near the clear water until dark when they would return home for dinner with their families before going outside to explore again later that night. There were also lots of animals such as pigs, chickens, cows and horses living close by including several large corn cribs where people could go for fun or work during those days while still having plenty of food options available nearby should they need it. In 1851 Samuel Morse established his telegraph line from Pomeroy to Dayton over an old post road running through present day Batavia Township which included parts of south Euclid Township at that time (Gould had already relocated his store to new quarters on Sixth Street). Girard, Ohio is a town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Girard was founded by French colonists in 1768 as Notre Dame de la Pointe and was named for Pierre-Jacques Girard, a French missionary who had explored the area in 1759. The first post office opened in 1770. In 1811, Girard became a county seat and remained so until 1959 when it became an unincorporated community. The town of Girard developed around a sawmill on the Scioto River which operated from 1815 to 1865; also located near the mill were stores, churches and other small businesses that acted as social hubs for local residents and travelers alike. The sawmill's successor - the Norfolk & Erie Railroad - built a depot here in 1868 after completing its line from Toledo to Cleveland via Cincinnati. In 1829, Girard was named the county seat of Lucas County. On November 1, 1846, the United States Census found that Girard had a population of 11 residents. On November 3, 1870, the post office at Girard was discontinued and its functions transferred to Youngstown.
