Girard is a small town in Adams County, Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1810 by Nicholas Girard and his wife, Sarah. The Girards were the first white settlers in what is now Adams County. In 1826, Girard became the seat ofAdams County after it was divided from Lawrence County. The settlement rapidly grew due to its location on the Scioto River and its many industries such as lumbering, farming, and manufacturing. In 1868, Girard became the capital ofAdams County when it was moved from Lawrence to Girard. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Girard underwent several hundred occupations including apaper mill; a bank; an insurance company; a textile factory; a meatpacking plant; and two hotels. The community has experienced several waves of population growth over the years with most current residents having originated from within or have ancestry from at least one of its constituent townships or villages.

Girard was a small town in the Allegheny Mountains of western Pennsylvania, United States. It is now part of the city of Pittsburgh. Girard was founded in 1792 by George Girard and his brothers-in-law, Daniel and Nicholas Latimer. The first settlers were farmers who raised crops and hunted game near what is now the Girard Mall. By 1815, Girard had a population of about 100 people. In 1825, Girard joined the United States as an independent state and became known as "The Keystone State." In 1827, John Denny founded the city of Pittsburgh and began to build its infrastructure including a canal system that linked the rivers at nearby Valley Forge. In 1830, Girard's mayor, James Kappeler, helped organize a group of local merchants to start an industry based on shipping coal from mines in central Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh. This led to growth in both Girard and Pittsburgh; by 1850, there were more than 1,500 residents living in these two towns. The late 1800s saw some significant changes for Girard: starting in 1901 it became home to The Ohio State University (OSU), which continues to be one of Pennsylvanians' top educational institutions today; also during this time period, construction began on what would become modern day girARD mall which opened in 1987
