In 1814, Girard was renamed after Jean-Baptiste de Girard, a French general who had played an important role in defeating British forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers. After America gained independence from France in 1783, Girard became part of Ohio Territory and continued to grow as a commercial center until it achieved statehood in 1907. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history including being abandoned numerous times due to conflict or natural disasters such as hurricanes or fires. However, through all of these experiences, Girard has always remaining an important community that loves its culture and history!
