In 1957, the USAF activated stationed at Lackland AFB Texas as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HHS) 11. In 1974, HHS became known as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HQ DH-1) when it moved from Texas to Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio. HQ DH-1 was responsible for all noncombat activities at Wright PATTERSON AFB including providing logistical support to other USAF installations worldwide.Throughout its long history, HQ DH-1 has given many gifts to residents of Girard Township including a hangar for their fighter planes which is still in use today; an annual Memorial Day Parade which features military fatigues worn by troops from all over the world; numerous local scholarships offered through its Programs Office; and countless community events throughout the year. This paper will cover some of the more significant gifts given by HQ DH-1 over its years of existence. It will also explore how these gifts have helped make Girard Township a vibrant community which enjoys good relations with its surrounding communities and countrywide support system.

The Ohio Air National Guard's 192nd Fighter Wing deployed a gift history to Girard, Ohio on Saturday. The Wing bestowed the first squadron patch from the 6th Fighter Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB on two pilots from the squadron and their commanding officer – Lt. Col. Jeffrey W. Ladd, 82nd FISWG Commander – as well as Sgt. 1st Class Michael J. Simonsen, 83rd FISWG Sergeant Major of the Reserve from Warren County, Ohio with appreciated service to the Wing and country. On Saturday morning, two pilots and their commanding officer - Lt. Col. Jeffrey W Ladd (82nd Fighter Squadron) & Sgt Micheal J Simonsen (83rd Fighter Squadron) - received 2 patches each from our 6th FS! This was an extremely nice gesture by our wing and it really shows how much we appreciate their dedicated service!

Girard is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area and is the county seat for Hamilton County. The first settler in Girard Township was George Hine, who landed on May 5, 1793 on land that he had purchased from the Shawnee Indian tribe. The village of Girard was platted in 1812 by General John Crouch as a stop on the Miami and Erie Canal. The name "Girard" comes from French meaning "happy place." A post office called Girard was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1829, Jacob Van Nostrand founded what would become United States Steel Company at what is now the corner of Elm and Third Streets in Girard Township. Van Nostrand ran United States Steel until his death in 1929; his son succeeded him as president and CEO of US Steel Corporation. In 1907, Gilbert Lyle organized a group of businessmen to purchase land around what is now Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's campus to build an industrial park that would include four manufacturing plants: Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT&R), American Can ManufacturingCompany (ACM), Armour Manufacturing Company (AMC) and Phelps Dodge Corporation (PDS).
