Garfield Heights is a small town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Garfield Heights is located in the Athens-Fayetteville-Marietta metropolitan area and is part of the Cincinnati–Northern Kentucky–West Chester Combined Statistical Area. The name Garfield Heights comes from George Washington Garfield, Jr., who grew up there and died in 1881. The first settler in what would become Garfield Heights was George Washington Garland, who arrived in 1796. He named his land "Garfield." By 1800, the area had 25 houses and 2 schools. In 1811, John Hays founded the first store here. By 1820, there were 50 residents and 8 businesses here. The Panic of 1893 hit this community hard; many people lost their jobs and homes prices plummeted. However, things began to improve starting around 1895 when A&P grocery store founder James Wirt acquired land here for a new store complex that he called "Wirt's Grove." This helped revive the economy of this small town as more people could buy products they couldn't find locally or online. In 1907, local resident Hiram Sibley built an addition to his home on Third Street known as "Sibley's Castle" which still stands today (it has been converted into a guesthouse). It was during this time that Sibley became one of the most influential leaders in downtown Cincinnati due to his donations to various civic organizations such as Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club. By 1920, there were 109 residents living within walking distance of all 6 business districts represented here - including Main Street Business District - with 1 movie theater being operated here too! But even during these tough times there were always ways for people to get together: jams were held every Saturday at Second Baptist Church while Unemployment Insurance rates stayed low; dances were staged at First Methodist Church on Thursdays during men’s day; fireworks displays took place on Fourth of July each year since 1903! A big change happened when Interstate 75 came through town between Cincinnati and Dayton en route to Cleveland (the bypass). This caused major disruptions for commercial drivers transporting goods along I-75 eastbound into Ohio (and westbound into Indiana) which led to increased shoplifting activity along main street by shoppers trying to avoid highway traffic! One solution was put in place where police used dogs trained specifically for tracking down thieves – it worked well until about 1970 when larger stores started implementing video surveillance systems! Garfield Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Garfield Heights were French traders and missionaries in 1701. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette and his party of six men explored the Great Lakes region between 1679 and 1681. They named the settlement after General John Wayne, who had fought for France in the American Revolution. In 1788, when Major George Washington's army passed through the area on their way to march against British forces at Yorktown, soldiers stopped at Garfields Inn for dinner. A plaque on the building still states that "George Washington dined here on July 4th." Garfield Heights grew rapidly during its early years as a result of its location near two major waterways; one served as a water route between Cleveland and Akron while another connected Lake Erie with Cleveland proper. The town was incorporated on April 15, 1825. By 1830, Garfield Heights had reached its present size of 26 blocks long and 13 blocks wide with a population of 1,200 people living in 150 lots stretching along state Creek Road (now useless). In 1836 or 1837 local resident David Mathers founded what is now known as Mathersville (population unknown). The village was originally located east of State Route 121 north of US-22 between Maplewood Avenue and Maple Ridge Boulevard today’s Garfield Heights recreation center southward past I-271 to reach State Route 271 which then crossed into Lyndhurst Township before ending up just northeast of present day Garfield Heights where it meets I-71/I-271 again becoming an unincorporated community once again annexation by Cleveland took place in 1956 making it part of Cleveland Municipal Court . One theory suggests that this strip mall development may have been inspired by Mathersville since it contained sametime items such as postcards from friends back home which could be mailed back quickly
