Garfield Heights, Ohio, is a small town that has a rich coffee history. The first coffee house in Garfield Heights was the Great Western Coffee House, which opened in 1875. It was later renamed the Garfield National Bank Coffee House and served as a meeting place for the town's leaders. In 1907, the first espresso machine was installed at the Great Western Coffee House and soon afterwards other cafes began to serve espresso drinks. In 1915, two brothers named Harry and Harold McGee started the shops Heart of Columbus Espresso & Tea Company and Harvester's café on East State Street respectively. These cafes were popular with Clevelanders because they offered high-quality espresso drinks at reasonable prices. In 1927, Harry McGee died suddenly and his brother took over his business. The Harry McGee Cafés continued to serve excellent coffee until 1992 when they closed their doors for good. The last owner of the Harry McGee Cafés was Don Herrington who reopened them in 2000 after years of neglect. He continues to serve delicious espresso drinks from his shop today. The store is known for its unique art deco style architecture which is a reminder of how important coffee has been in Garfield Heights' culture since its beginning.

The Larsens were known for their hand-dried coffee beans, which they sold from their café. In 1906, the Larsens moved to Garfield Heights and opened a second café on Elm Street. They remained open until 1929. In 1941, the Larsens partnered with Harry Fenton and began producing espresso drinks called "Fenton's Favourites." The business grew slowly but steadily over the years until it was purchased by JBC Coffee in 1978. In 1984, JBC merged with Keurig Corporation and discontinued production of espresso beverages (except for Fenton's). It is unknown when or how Garfield Heights first became home to its own coffee shop; however, it has been continuously operating since then.

It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. Garfield Heights was founded in 1887 by Dr. John Garvin and his wife Esther Garvin. The original home of the Garfield family still stands today - it has been used as a restaurant and store since its inception. The community's name derives from John Garfield's election to represent Athens-Clarion County in the United States Senate in 1888. The street that runs through downtown Garfield Heights is also named after John Garfield - it becomes Judge Street when crossed by Interstate Highway 495 (which leads to Akron). The first post office in Garfield Heights opened on December 15, 1889, and was known as "Aurora". It was renamed "Garland" on February 8, 1890; "Drury" on March 9; and finally "Garwin" on May 16, 1890. At its peak during World War I there were over 60 post offices within a radius of 10 miles of Garland! balloon flying service started operations from Garland Airport in 1915! The early years of radioactivity led to many changes for Garland throughout the 1920s including an increase in population due to immigration from Hungary (the addition of whom caused some growth problems), technological advances such asIRS recording equipment being developed here which would be later used at Whiting Field Air Force Base near Indianapolis for training purposes (the aeronautical research hangar still bears this name), local paper mills shutting down due to competition from larger plants elsewhere in Ohio combined with increased production costs associated with developing new technology..... all while quality control standards remained high throughout much of these times!!
