Garfield Heights is a town in Harrison County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,751 at the 2010 census. Garfield Heights is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on November 12, 1824 by John C. Garfield and his wife Hetty.[1] It was named after General George Washington's home county in Virginia. The first post office in Garfield Heights was established on December 8, 1827. Garfield Heights started as a small farming community with around 100 residents. By 1830, it had developed into a local commercial center with stores and restaurants including Jardin's Cafeteria and the First National Bank of Dayton. In 1836, the town reached its peak population with over 1,000 people living there. However, during the 1840s and 1850s various economic factors led to declining population levels and bankruptcy for many of the businesses in Garfield Heights- most notably Jardin's Cafeteria which went out of business in 1865 due to competition from Akron's more successful Merchants Coffee House & Cafe[2]. In 1860 Garfield Heights became an unincorporated community when it merged with neighboring townships under The Township Act of 1861.[3] Some residents continued to live in their homes through this time but most moved out or closed their businesses when township boundaries were redefined following statehood in 1912[4]. A few years later that same year, township trustees amalgamated three other smaller communities (Alford Township; Beavercreek Township; and Hilltop) into what would become Garfield Heights proper[5]. This merger created an additional 2 miles (3 km) of streets between Alford Township and Beavercreek Township while Hilltop remained still separate from the rest of the township[6]. The Gemmill Manufacturing Company operated a foundry located near present day Centennial Square until 1896 when it moved to Hartford City because of higher production costs associated with using coal mines for steelmaking instead of iron ore used at Gemmill[7]). That same year saw another blow to local industry when Fruitland Oil Co., one of several early oil companies active in central Ohio,[8], failed to pay its workers on time leading to multiple riots throughout central Ohio that week resulting in twenty-three injuries and $100 thousand worth of damage done to businesses including four Gemmills[9][10][11][12]). After monthslong negotiations fruitless efforts were made by management team lead by James Pendergast [13] finally operations ceased on October 15th [14]). During this time much property within present day Arlingtonview neighborhood also changed hands violently as result transportation boycotts took place affecting farms surrounding village limits
