Garfield Heights was founded in 1853 as a post office and has been occupied by various military forces since its inception. The first military deployment to Garfield Heights was in 1855 when the United States Colored Troops were stationed here for three years to help deal with violence and racism on the part of white settlers. After their departure, the town quickly became known as a stronghold of black militancy and politics. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson sent troops to garrison here after riots broke out in Detroit over racial discrimination against African Americans. Garfield Heights was founded in 1825 and named for General Andrew Garfield, who died in 1881 during the American Civil War. Garfield Heights is located on the southern border of Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area and is part of the Cleveland–Cleveland–Fremont Combined Statistical Area. The city's boundaries are downtown to the north, west and south; Kenmore Avenue to the east; and Euclid Avenue to the northwest. The first settler in what would become Garfield Heights was James Sanger who arrived there in 1825 from Cherry Township, New York Territory. He built a cabin on Haggerty Hill near present day Garfield Boulevard and his name appears on one of two buildings still standing in that location – now known as Sanger House – which he purchased from David Conklin for $350 dollars Creek Indian Money No 1/2 dollars cash (now worth over $1 million). The second settler to arrive were his brothers Isaac and Nathan: Isaac arrived about 1830 while Nathan came later that year. This group of settlers began farming land around their cabins before moving into town proper in 1835 when they founded what would become Garfield Heights’ first store: The Storey & Company grocery store on Haggerty Hill opposite today’s KFC restaurant complex across Euclid Ave.. In 1840 John Wesley Sellers moved from Newtown Square (now Westlake Village) Pennsylvania with his family arriving at approximately the same time as Garfield Heights did: They set up shop along Elmira Road just west of Canada Road between Haggerty Hill Rd., now Erie Blvd.,NW corner current site of IKEA & Home Depot stores then occupied by REI car dealership until it closed down early 1990’s; later home to several small businesses including Goodwill Furniture warehouse until it closed down circa 2020… In 1850 United Methodist Church was organized here with Rev Samuel Morse officiating at first services conducted outdoors then inside building soon afterwards under new pastor Elijah Hicks also First Baptist Church began services here soon afterwards also a schoolhouse nearby been used as such through 1870’s when addition of large block house erected near current site Stroud Drugstore opened here circa 1880 after many failed attempts by previous ownership finally taking hold thanks largely to local resident Dr John Ransom who donated five acres adjacent to school property which became parkland namesakes following incorporation date It should be noted that not all residents within this tiny community belonged to any particular religion or denomination however due relatively speakingto its proximityTo other cities & counties within an already populous region religious affiliation gradually became more important especially given its constrained geographical surroundings especially considering access To public transportation such as horse drawn wagons available only during daylight hours making commuting difficult if not impossible particularly for those living outside Of town limits or rural areas .
