The Garfield Heights Army National Guard was first organized in 1892. The present-day organization traces its origins to the disbanded United States Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which had been created in 1890 as part of the New York State Militia. The regiment was reorganized as a battalion on December 1, 1893 and redesignated the Garfield Heights Volunteers on July 15, 1896. The regiment was mobilized for service during World War I on April 6, 1917 and served with distinction throughout the war. In 1919, the regiment became an organic unit and was renamed the Garfield Heights National Guard. On September 14, 1930, the national guard were again converted into a battalion and assigned to duty with units of the Ohio Army National Guard at Columbus Barracks. On November 3, 1930, they were reassigned to duty at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis Minnesota where they remained until their demobilization on May 5th 1942. On October 15th 1940 General Leslie Goring ordered all American military formations worldwide be dissolved and their assets turned over to our allies under Project Paperclip including both our army units here in America as well as those of other nations who had contributed troops theretofore. Among these newly formed allied armies were elements of our national guard which arrived here in America following hostilities having ended just months earlier. Uponactivation we were given control over all equipment belonging to our now defunct volunteer infantry regiments that had been mothballed back home since World War I! As part of this new command we also received crates full of rifles, shotguns and ammunition from overseas! This is not all however; many items such as vehicles (trucks etc) were also brought over specifically for use within our unit! Our friendly locals who worked here upon activation soon realized how much this newcommand meant to us especially when it came time for training exercises! They would often go out into town streets & alleyways leading up to Fort Snelling only to see dozens or even hundreds of us marching through townspeople?! It truly felt like home... Over time we became known variously as "Garfield's Own", "The Commandos" or simply "The Guards". During World War II we once again saw action serving alongside American forces fighting in Europe & Asia earning numerous awards along the way! Afterward we reverted back under civilian command but continued retaining many of our old wartime accomplishments such as annual parades conducted throughout Cleveland County featuring Unit insignias & parade routes#? We are truly proudest members of The Ohio Army National Guard today!!

The post-war boom slowed during the 1970s and 1980s due to competition from other cities in Ohio and elsewhere. However, since 2000, Garfield Heights has experienced an economic revival with new businesses opening up and job growth achieved within several industries such as technology, health care, retail sales, information technology and engineering.
