In Garfield Heights, Ohio, the air force has been a part of the community for over sixty years. The first military installation in the city was Fort Sheridan, which opened in 1917. It was later moved to what is now the Richards Army Air Field. In 1940, the United StatesAAF activated its first operational fighter squadron in Cleveland at Fairchild Airport. This was followed by activation of other squadrons throughout the Midwest and Northeast during World War II. During peacetime since 1946, USAF activity has been sole-source support to local government agencies through unit deployments and missile firings from various locations around town. However, in 1999 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a program called “4th Generation” that aimed to develop advanced aircraft technologies for use by both USAAF and NATO partners. As a result of this initiative, many Wright brothers-inspired airplane designs have come into being such as the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. Since then numerous types of helicopters have also been built at various locations across Garfield Heights thanks to DARPA funding including Chinooks and Apache helicopters. 2 On July 15th 1951, on Independence dayUSAFA activated its 22nd Fighter Wing with Republic P-47s flown by Capts Kenneth Eakin (1921), Carl Woerner (1945), Don Patton (1948), Harold Welch (1949)and Bob Lovell(1950). The wing's first mission was an escort mission against North Korean MiG flights operating out of Wonsan AFB south of Pyongyang."
