Navy gifts have been a part of the Galion community for many years. In 1863, the first bluejackets were stationed in the city and soon began giving out navy gift baskets to their friends and relatives. Gifts became increasinglyankaired as war grew closer. From 1903 until 1917, Galion was home to USS Constitution (CV-4) and USS Constitution Museum. The museum kept track of every navy gift given out from that time until it closed in 1978. As a result, we can enjoy some fantastic naval gift history from our past! In 1893, Commodore John Rodgers donated a ship called USS Gambler to the Galion Navy Yard as a Thank You Gift For Good Conduct during World War I. That same year, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter also presented USS Gambler to the city as a goodwill gesture following World War I. Commodore Rodgers had also givenUSS Hammond (DD-5), which later served as an exhibit at the museum, to Galion in 1898 for use on local occasions. The USS Galion was a United States Navy destroyer that served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The ship was named for USS Galion, a construction vessel which served as the first of five destroyers built at the Toledo Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 1945. The ship was launched on October 15, 1945 and completed on November 1, 1945.
Galion, Ohio is a community located in the northwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 5,824 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1788 by John Galison and was named for him. The first post office opened in 1814, and Galion became a village in 1832. The first school was built in 1836, and the first hospital opened in 1842. In 1870, Galion had 1 store and 10 residences. In 1916, the town annexed the villages of Centerville to its north and Woolwich to its south; these annexation changes increased its population to 11,912 by 2000. Galion is home to two universities: Kent State University (founded in 1920) and Youngstown State University (founded in 1932). These institutions have major campuses within walking distance of each other. Additionally, there are several businesses located within walking distance of various cultural attractions such as theaters and amusement park rides.

In 1802, Ohio was still a part of the United States. The area that is now Galion was then known as the Miami Territory. It included all of what is now Muskingum County and part of Erie County. Ohio's first territorial legislature, convened in 1792, voted to make Galion an official town in the territory. The vote happened two weeks after Ohio became a state in 1796. The first settler in the area that is now Galion was John Davenport, who arrived in 1798 from Connecticut. He built a cabin on the Scioto River near present-day Perrysburg. Davenport named his new settlement for General George Washington, who had been commander at Fort Pitt during the French and Indian War (1763-1776). Davenport's cabin soon proved to be too small for settlers and he moved his colony to a more permanent location on the Scioto Riverbank about three miles downstream from modern-day Perrysburg. Here he founded another new settlement called Licking County seat because its original site could only accommodate about seventy people at a time. In 1800, Davenport sold his land east of Present-Day Perrysburg to Nicholas Sisson and John Whitely for two dollars per acre. The first store opened in 1801 at what is today Licking Creek Road across from present day Clifton Park Shopping Center when it was owned by Nicholas Sisson and John Whitely. By 1811, there were five stores open along Licking Creek Road with an average daily population of twenty people or less because most settlers traveled to nearby Toledo or Cleveland for goods they needed but did not have time to purchase them outright. The population peaked around 1830 when it reached one hundred people before gradually declining until it reached sixty-five people by 1850 due to internal migration and other causes such as industry moving into central Ohio while farming northward into Muskingum County—a process known as deindustrialization—and increased competition from industry within state boundaries which led to joblessness among those left behind during this period of rapid change
Galion was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his brother-in-law, James Steuart. The town was named for the giant Galion who roamed the area during the late 1700s. The Steuart family owned a large farmstead in Galion and operated it until 1848. In that year, they sold their land to John Cuyahoga County for $5,000. From then on, Galion became a part of Cuyahoga County.
