The National Guard of Ohio is a military reserve force that provides law enforcement and other essential services to the state of Ohio. The guard was organized on July 1, 1903 as the Ohio State Militia. The militia was merged with the National Guard on September 15, 1907. The original national guard unit was composed of 3,000 soldiers, though this number has been gradually reduced over time due to shrinking enrollment and budget constraints. In 1916, the national guard became a separate arm of the military when it was authorized to wear uniforms. The Galion (Ohio) National Guard Museum is located in downtown Galion and preserves the history of the national guard in Ohio. It offers exhibits about American history and military aspects of national guard duty. There are also displays about local militias in different parts of Ohio and how they have contributed to state defense since 1903. In addition, there is a library adjacent to museum which offers books about the history of militias in America and Galeon County specifically.
The National Guard is the oldest and largest reserve force in the United States. It was created on April 16, 1792 by an act of Congress under the first president of the United States, George Washington. The National Guard consists of over 650,000 troops who are organized into units statewide. They are responsible for guarding public safety, protecting critical infrastructure, and support activities such as search and rescue. There have been a number of national guard gifts over the years. Here are five examples: 1) A rifle from a unit’s veteran or reserve soldier is a great gift for any military-themed birthday party or holiday event. 2) A grenade from a unit’s member can be used to celebrate patriotic events like Fourth of July fireworks shows or Independence Day celebrations. 3) A flag from a unit’s member can be displayed in your home as part of patriotism Month or during national holidays like Veterans Day or Memorial Day. 4) A teddy bear from a unit’s member can be given as an anniversary gift at some point in their life. 5) A vehicle from a unit’s member can also beGiven as a Christmas present, Valentine's Day present, or just because they're great people!
The National Guard was first organized in Ohio on November 12, 1812. It was not until May 3, 1861 that the Ohio National Guard was ordered to draft into Confederate service. On December 15, 1861, the Confederate States of America merged with the United States of America and the Ohio National Guard continued to serve as part of that new nation. The unit passed out of commission on October 16, 1865.
Galion, Ohio is a small town in the 1840s and is one of the oldest settlements in the area. The original residents were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables. They built a log cabin on a hill in 1847, which is still standing today. After some growth and progress, Galion experienced its first tornado on November 3rd, 1892. It was destroyed by an EF3 tornado that damaged much of the town. In 1954, Galion had its first shopping mall when it was built on land that was once part of the old millrace canal. The mall has since been demolished and most of what remains is now used for agricultural purposes. In 2002, Galion had its own professional basketball team called the Panthers which played their games at nearby Local High School until 2009 when they moved to Cincinnati to become the Bengals.
The United States National Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to 1792. The first national guard units were raised in Connecticut, and Massachusetts followed suit in 1795. The New York National Guard was the first unit to be mobilized for service in the American Revolutionary War on April 15, 1775.
The Continental congress created the Continental Army on June 14, 1776 and designated October 12 as the day of mobilization by Congress. On November 3, George Washington was elected as the first commander-in-chief of the Continental army. He ordered all state militias to report for duty on December 15th. The 273rd Regiment of Foot (British) was sent from Boston to meet with Washington at Mount Vernon on January 10th, 1777. It is reported that General Gates Nawen offered his regiment's officers swords but they refused because they did not want to fight against their own countrymen.
In response toWashington's call for volunteers, James Kieft organized a Second Rhode Island Volunteers battalion on February 5th and it served throughout the war under General Nathanael Greene. On April 25th,1781 Major John Sullivan enlisting from Rhode Island was killed fighting at Saratoga Creek during the Battle of Saratoga campaign when his unit became engaged in battle against British forces under Cornwallis instead of advancing towards Howe's army which had been forced back by disease and attrition led by Washington himself. As a result Sullivan's death left an gaping hole in America's military capability which continued until 1812 when troops were finally mustered into service again after Confederation.
In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson recommended that all American states should have their own militia forces within three months of becoming a republic due to growing fear about another European land invasion or revolution similar to what had transpired during World War I which had left millions dead. In 1917 Congress passed legislation authorizing creation of reserve units called National Guard Bureau units. These Reserve Units were activated immediately upon ratification of the Constitution creating separate regiments numbering anywhere from 20,000-250,000 men across all fifty U S states ref>. From then until 1958 there were only two occasions when wholenational guard battalions deployed outside their home state; both times being deployments aimed at preventing insurrection or internal unrest within those states while also providing training and doctrine for future deployments.National Guard History Museum
