Galion, Ohio is a town of about 50,000 people in the northeastern part of the state of Ohio. It became an important military center during the American Civil War and later played a role in World War II. The population of Galion peaked at 100,000 in 1940, but has declined since then. Today it has a population of about 30,000. The first military base in Galion was set up by General George Washington when he moved his army from Philadelphia to Valley Forge in 1777. During the American Civil War, Galion served as both an artillery battery and a brigade headquarters for Union forces under General Daniel Boone III. There were only 10 cadets at West Point at this time; however, through enlistment into Confederate forces or service with militia units throughout New York State (and eventually Pennsylvania), more than 500 men from across New York joined West Point’s 1st Regiment Armory Company on September 8th 1861: This company would go on to be known as “The Rifles” due to their use of rifles instead of swords for training purposes – even today they still participate in ceremonies commemorating that day’s event!
