Galion is a small town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,146 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton metropolitan area. The village of Galion was founded in 1836 by John C. Galison and his wife Genetta Neely Galison as a post office on the east side of the Scioto River near what is now Mentor. The first store opened in 1838 and the first school in 1840. A mill was built about 1850 and began to produce flour for local markets; it ceased operations around 1910. In 1865,Galion became an independent municipality with its own government and court system; it adopted a new name, "Galion", on October 1, 1870 after nearby Akron had changed its name to Canton two years earlier. A major development in early Galion history took place when John Pemberton erected a sawmill on High Street just west of present day First Avenue in 1875 which would become one of the largest mills ever built in southwestern Ohio (it still operates today). The mill produced lumber until 1907 when it closed due to low demand from farmers for logs exported to Japan during World War I. In 1907 also came construction of Galion's first four schools: those located at First Avenue and Main Street (now McKeown Elementary School), East Side Road (now Elmira Road), West Side Road (now Lawrenceburg Pike) and South Side Road (now Winthrop Road). By 1930 there were eighteen schools within the limits of what is now known as Village Green neighborhoods adjacent to downtown; by 1950 there were thirty-six Schools within Village Green boundaries alone! Galion was a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Galion Township was George Browning, who arrived in 1814. He and his family were farmers, and by 1830 they had bought land at the junction of the Little Miami and Scioto Rivers. In 1834, they built a log cabin on their farmstead for $4 per acre (0.60 km²). They named their farm "Galion" after General James Galbraith's father-in-law, Colonel Jonathan Dayton (1796–1854), when Dayton learned of their location. In 1844, John Salyer moved to Galion from Springfield Township near Ada and began farming there also. His grandson John Salyer III continued operations until 1970; he raised hogs and chickens on his property until it became a nature preserve under state ownership in 1978. The first post office at Galion was established in 1845; it operated for three years under the name "New Salem." In that year, mail deliveries were made two miles (3 km) away to an old store on State Road 12A which had been built by David Wells as part of a road construction project sponsored by President James K. Polk to improve access to commerce within the newly formed United States during its early days as a nation. In 1865, wagon roads connecting Medina County with other parts of Ohio were completed; this allowed for easier transportation of goods between these rural areas and larger cities such as Cincinnati and Cleveland along routes that today still serve as highways or motorways.
