Galion is a small town in central Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Canton, OH, Micropolitan Statistical Area. Galion is home to the Galion State Fairgrounds and also to two large shopping malls - The Mall of America and Wetlands Park mall - both of which are anchored by Sears and JCPenney. The area that would become Galion was first settled in 1796 by George Washington Carver and his family. Carver had been born in what is now Delaware County, Ohio. He moved from Maryland to Athens County in 1796 when he married Sarah Lewis. They opened a grocery store there and started farming land around it. In 1814, they bought some additional land for $5 per acre from Jacob Schaefer. By 1822, they had built a cabin on their farmstead and named it "Galion". The first post office was established at Galion in 1827; it was discontinued in 1865. The present incarnation of Galion began as an agricultural village with about 100 residents when railroads arrived in the early 19th century; by 1870, however, only 10 remained living within the village limits alone (the rest lived outside of its boundaries). galionschools
