The Coast Guard Station in Galion, Ohio was established on May 12, 1892. The original station was located at the intersection of Canfield and Delaware avenues. The present station is located on the northwest side of town. The first coast guard officer at the station was Samuel M. Greer. Galion, Ohio is a small town located in the center of Summit County, Ohio. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Galion is part of the Akron–Summit County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Galion were Quakers who came from Pennsylvania in 1788. They built a gristmill on the Scioto River and named their community after George Washington's home state of Virginia. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1827 but its ruins remain standing today as a historic landmark. In 1836, John Dolan founded the paper mills at Galion that would become one of the largest paper Milling companies in America. The mills produced newspapers, magazines, and other printing products for both local and national circulation until they closed in 1951. Galion also played an important role during World War II as an important munitions production center. In 1942, General Motors made its first large-scale investment here when it acquired Ann Arbor Paper Company for $35 million dollars. GM then turned to Galion to produce parts for military vehicles and planes which helped support American victory in World War II. In 1951, all six of the paper mills were shut down due to problems with automated machinery and competition from Japanese manufacturers who had developed similar equipment at much lower costs than Galion could afford to compete with. However, within two years all six mills were reopened thanks to a combination of government intervention (theomerization laws) and private investment (the opening up of industry to foreign competition). Today three out of five factories are still operated by printers who rely on traditional manual processes such as rollforming and binding books into tubes before mailing them off to customers around the world
