Gahanna is a small town in the east-central Ohio region. The population was 12,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gahanna–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village became a county seat of Hamilton County in 1827. In 1830, it incorporated as a town. In 1836, Gahanna was chosen as the site for what would eventually become University Park. On July 1, 1892, University Park became an independent college city when it merged with Cleveland State Teachers College to form Cleveland State University. Included in this effort was the USS Constitution (LHD-3). The LHD-3 was an all-new type of destroyer and it had a variety of new capabilities that would come in handy during wartime. One such capability was its air launched missiles which could pierce any target with ease. This ability made the Constitution an ideal vessel for anti-submarine warfare operations. In addition, it also had a number of other capabilities that would be important during wartime. For example, it carried torpedoes which could destroyed submarines should they enter Japanese waters, or it could fire rockets at enemy targets to disable them. The USS Constitution's deployment was short-lived however; it returned home in 1946 after serving in Japan for only three months!
