During this time period there were also two woolen mills - one established in1854 by George Cohan and another started up in 1861 by Augustus Kelley - both closed down within a few years due to economic failures. The current University of Akron campus began operations on April 1st, 1912 with three buildings: A Building for Instructional Use which housed classrooms and laboratories; A Building for administrative purposes which served as an office annex; And An Old brick building For Physical Education Which housed gymnasiums and football fields.
