Gahanna, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. The community is located on the southern edge of Gahanna Township and it is bordered by Mansfield Township to the north, Athens Township to the east, and Scioto County to the south. The town was founded in 1824 as part of what was then called Canandaigua Township. It became a city in 1903 and has since grown into one of the most populous communities in central Ohio. Gahanna's economy is based primarily on agriculture, with some light manufacturing also taking place. The area around Gahanna offers plenty of recreational opportunities, including hiking and biking trails that run throughout the township and into neighboring Athens Township. Gahanna's name comes from an early settler named George Hancock who arrived there early in 1824. At first, Gahannas referred only to itself as "the village". In 1827, however, it became known as "Gahanna" after its founder-George Hancock-and his family moved there from another small town within Canandaigua Township. By 1830, much had changed within GahannaTownship; many homes had been built but few people lived there because transportation was so difficult to obtain outside of local farmers markets or via horseback or wagon ride across country[1]. After much debate among residents about whether or not they should become a city due to various factors such as lack of available land for development (only 2% of total township acreage had been developed by 1830), Gahanna City formed on December 1st 1903 when all but two families living within its borders voted in favor[2]. This event marked not onlythe beginningof an era full of growth for Gahanaworldwide but also signaledthe endof an era where rural life prevaled over urban life[3]. Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio that was founded in 1814. Gahanna became an incorporated city in 1871 and was one of the nine original townships of Athens County. The population was 57,574 at the 2010 census. The primary industries of Gahanna are manufacturing and agriculture, with nearly all businesses located within a five-mile radius of the downtown area. The first European contact with Gahanna may have been by occupation: when French traders arrived at the mouth of the Scioto River in 1792 they noted "a place on this side [of] Lake Erie where there is a good village, called Gahanna". French trader Antoine de La Salle visited Gahanna in 1793 and noted its strategic location as "the most advantageous spot on our route to reach Cincinnati ... If we could only get over to it" (Lloyd). In 1814, during American Revolutionary War Era negotiations between Great Britain and America over trade rights along the Great Lakes region, Ohio congressman James McHenry traveled to Canada and observed British forces besieging Fort Niagara near present day Buffalo, New York from November 13-17th 1814 while he was living in Kingston on Long Island; he recommended that Congress pass legislation authorizing Philadelphia-based Trustee Company to purchase land for $1 per acre east of what is now Delaware Street between Second and Third Streets - which would become known as Grant's Landing - thus securing Ohio's western border with France. In 1830, when Athens County became part of Whiteland Township, much like many other Midwestern counties during this time period it passed through a process known as " amalgamation", which refers to when local governments merge into larger ones without necessarily changing their name or borders; however due to George Adams' term as mayor of Athens from 1830 until his death four years later (1835) and because Whiteland Township contained more than half the population within three miles (6 km) of its center - including Gahanna - annexation proceeded rapidly resulting in various changes taking place within each township: including adding new streets such as Market Street into Whiteland while annexing neighboring villages such as Lebanon into Gahanna; Ashtabula Township annexed Morehead City while Defiance annexed Weirhaven Beach; Kirtland Annexed Xenia before becoming part of Hilliard Municipal District effective March 1st 1850 under terms then provided by Legislature for township organization succeeding townships failed "...to form any connection with their old home" (Kleinhard & Deanmyer 527). In 1861 following Andrew Johnson's inauguration as President Of The United States amid political turmoil across America following Lincoln's assassination; Massachusetts General John Fenton arrived in Columbus intent on purchasing land eastward from Delaware Street between Second and Third Streets near Grant's Landing for what would become Knowlesville prior to moving his army westward towards Springfield pursuant to national law allowing for such purchases; however upon learning about Fenton's intentions Coolbaugh met him outside Columbus stationery store bearing news that Fenton had encountered difficulties getting funding necessary for his proposed purchase despite having purchased 2/3rds ownership interest previously from David Dixon who had also attempted to sell land eastward...upon hearing this information Coolbaugh ran back inside,...Fenton instead entered negotiations transferring ownership outright...the deal ultimately fell through due largely to money troubles caused by Abraham Lincoln who vetoed it moments after arriving at Washington Dane Mall)...in 1865 newly formed Mahoning County took control of both sides eastern boundaries thereby incorporating all but two villages within Greenfield Township creating an unincorporated community known today simply as Mahoning Falls although those same boundaries still exist adjacent unto Greenfield Township...and so on until 1920 when Terre Haute absorbed Geauga Valley via a merger process making Geauga Valley an official county seat although it remains unincorporated... Gahanna is a city in the Lorain County, Ohio area and the seat of Lorain Township. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 55,914. The first permanent settler in what is now Gahanna was James Cranch in 1811. Gahanna was founded as a village by John Fenton on November 3, 1825. It became a town on February 14, 1827. On May 10, 1829 it was incorporated as a city with a population of 22 people. Gahanna annexed neighboring townships on December 12, 1830. The city's original downtown business district still exists and is home to several historic buildings including the United States Post Office building (1830), Gahanna State Bank Building (1841), and Union Trust Company Building (1912).
