Gahanna is a city in central Ohio, United States. The population was 33,815 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Greater Cleveland and the 25th largest in Ohio. Gahanna is located on the southern edge of Lake Erie and is bordered by Summit County to the east, Medina County to the west, and Cuyahoga County to the north. The first Europeans to view what would become Gahanna were French traders who landed there in 1692 after sailing downriver from Québec City on their way to find new land that could be ruled by France. French fur trader Pierre Marquette had earlier sighted this area while exploring near present-day Buffalo, New York; he named it for Jean Baptiste Gahonnais, captain of his ship La Salle. In 1795, Ohio General Nicholas Perry moved an American military force northeast from Fort Loudoun south along present-day Route 66 into what became Medina and Summit Counties during the Northwest Territory period; when Perry arrived at Gahangaheen (now part of downtown), he found a village of about twenty people with crops and huts sitting on high ground between two forks of Indian Creek where today’s Depot Road meets campuskh Drive. The first permanent European settler was John Houghtaling who platted what became known as “Houghtaling Township” in 1807 on land now within downtown Gahanna limits. Houghtaling founded a sawmill adjacent to what is now Second Street NW which continued operation until 1840 when it closed because of lack of virgin lumber available nearer Cleveland proper due to competition from more established lumber producers in Pennsylvania and East Tennessee. A post office called "Hottenville" was established at nearby Scranton Pike (later Fourth Street) in 1828 but discontinued operations because no mail reached Gahanna then or afterwards despite being open four days per week!. Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Trumbull County. The population was 48,899 at the 2010 census. Gahanna is home to The University of Akron, one of America's largest universities and one of the most comprehensive university systems in the United States. The first European settlers in what would become Gahanna were French Catholic missionaries who arrived in 1797. They built a small log cabin on what is now Wabash Avenue and called it Notre Dame de Gahanna (Our Lady's School). In 1814, by order of President James K. Polk, French Canadian Jesuit Father Antoine-Jacques Lescot founded Mission Santa Fé de Gahanna onland from Immaculate Conception Parish on West Main Street near today's UI campus (then known as Euclid College). The school grew slowly until1829 when it became part of Xavier University with which it remained affiliated for over 100 years until its merger with UNiversity Holdings Incorporated in 2006 to form The University of Akron . In 1868, when Cleveland Municipal Court was created, Gahanna was chosen as its temporary courthouse because no other buildings could be fit inside the then-new City Hall building on Main Street (). In 1870–71, local businessmen formed a group to build a new courthouse that would serve all of Trumbull County ().
