The first coffee beans to be roasted in Gahanna, Ohio wereFootnote 1 in 1859. The beans were brought over by J.C. Caldwell from Illinois and roasted on the old mill site on the north side of town. In 1865, Mr. and Mrs. John Dickey started a small grocery store next door to the mill and began selling coffee by weight. In 1868, they added a roaster to their business and began marketing their coffee as "Gahanna Coffee." The first espresso machine was installed in 1936 at the Gahanna Coffee Company. This machine made it possible for people living around Gahanna to enjoy quality coffee while convenience was king!
Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the United States. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mahoning County. Gahanna was founded in 1814 as a trading post on the Scioto River by David Witt and Solomon Hanna. In 1827, Gahanna became an independent village when it seceded from Mahoning County. The Gahanna Manufacturing Company was founded in 1888 by John Danko and his son John P. Danko. The company manufactured tableware, porcelain and other household items. In 1924, the company merged with Cement Corporation to form CementCorporation Incorporated (CCC). The company operated under many different names until its acquisition by Sperry Rand in 1986. The first college in Gahanna was West Liberty University which opened its doors on July 1, 1869 under the name of "West Liberty Female Academy". On October 15th of that year, WLU became coeducational with Men's College of Ohio (now known as Youngstown State University) opening its doors at 4 p.m.. On November 3rd 1870 WLU merged with Strayer Seminary to become "Strayer College". In 1893 Ferry Hall alsoopened as a women's dormitory adjacent to Sparrow Hall on campus; this building still stands today on Spencer Street near DeWitt Drive! In 1907 Ladies' Home Journal editor Anna May Alcott visited Gahanna and wrote about it for their annual "Travel Report" issue: "…the town has been growing rapidly since I last saw it; there are now over twenty-five thousand people hereabouts and they are all engaged in some occupation or another."

As one of only two cities (the other being Cleveland) with a Purdue University campus within its boundaries, Gahanna has long been home to students and researchers from Purdue University's School of Engineering and Applied Science as well as various other colleges and universities that have campuses there including Ball State University, Kent State University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Wright StateUniversity and even Mohawk College!
