Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Ross County after Warren and Dayton. The name "Gahanna" originated from an Iroquois word meaning "place where many buffalo grazed." Gahanna was founded in 1811 by George Stephenson as a trading post on the Cuyahoga River opposite today's John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The first settlement in what is now Gahanna happened about 1800 when Major John Logan set up a trading post on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River near modern day Mentor, Ohio. In 1811, George Stephenson founded Gahanna as a trading post on the west bank of the Cuyahaga River opposite today's John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum along with his business partner James Reed. Gahanna became known as one of America's early frontier settlements because it lay between two major Indian tribes: The Wyandots to the north and Shawnees to the south; thus it offered security against raids by these groups and helped introduce new goods and technologies into American society during this time period In 1821, Stephenson built his first mill which processed lumber from nearby woods for export to England In 1830, Stephenson laid out a town grid system that still exists today A store called The Post Office opened in 1834 which later became part of First National Bank In 1840, Gahanna incorporated as a village under its own government On October 15th, 1842, General David enrollment arrived at Fort Erie (now Yorktown), then located just north of present-day Gahannan City Limits., he found that there were only six permanent residents living within its walls – four farmers’ families plus one slave couple . Enrollment totals for all US military posts during this time totaled over 4600 men but only 910 were actually enrolled . After discussing options with President Franklin D Roosevelt , General David decided to move Fort Erie closer to Chicago so more soldiers could be employed there however ...............General David also recommended moving all troops back to their original locations throughoutOhio before Thanksgiving Day due to adverse weather conditions ...................... By 1850 only 4 remaining settlers had moved away while 350 men remained at Fort Erie.............Based on these figures it can be assumed that less than 1/3rds (just over 30 percent) of all enlistments during America’s “War With Indians” took place within 2 miles (500 meters) of our current location

The town of Gahanna, Ohio was founded on October 12, 1814 by the merger of two villages. The first village, called Gahanna and located in what is now Lucas County, was founded in 1796. The second village, which was located in Medina County, was founded in 1814. The towns were named for General George Washington and his wife Martha: Washingtonville (Gahanna), Mount Vernon (Mentor), and Arlington (Arlington Heights). In 1836 the towns were consolidated into one municipality and re-named Gahanna. In 1871 the Ohio legislature passed a bill establishing a school district in Gahanna that would serve both the first and second villages. The legislation also authorizedthe erection of a courthouse and other necessary buildings within the boundaries of the school district. On May 1, 1872 the cornerstone for the new courthouse was laid by Mayor James Fenton with assistance from Governor John Pemberton. The building opened for business on September 1, 1872. The growth of Gahanna during its early years cannot be accurately estimated because there are no records dating back to that time that survive intact. However, it is likely that at some point between 1800 and 1830 alone Gahanna had over 100 residents! Over time however “growth” slowed due to competition from larger settlements such as Lima or Lebanon Township which had been established earlier within what is now Lucas County. Nonetheless, through hard work and determination throughout many years much progress has been made inGahana including establishment of schools, construction of government buildings including a courthouse/ jail complex as well as numerous private businesses which continue to thrive today! These days much credit should go to Mayor James Fenton who has led this city through very difficult times – an exampleof how community activism can lead to success!
Gahanna was founded in 1813 by John Gahanna and his family. The town was originally called "Harrison" after Isaac Harrison, the first settler. The Gahannas were a prominent Ohio family and their home at the corner of High Street and Elm Street is still standing today. After John Gahanna's death in 1848, his son-in-law, George Hodge, took over the business. In 1892, Hodge merged with a rival company to form the Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company.
