The first European settlers in what is now Fremont were German farmers who arrived in 1792. They named their town after Frederick Wilhelm von Neuman, Count of Freiwald (1575-1624), a son of Prince Rupert of Wales who had bought land around present-day Cleveland. The first post office operated at Fremont in 1806. A year later, a town meeting decided that Fremont should become an agricultural center because it had the best soils for growing crops and foundCLEVELAND COUNTY'S FIRST TELEPHONE IN FREMONT—an early example of modern telecommunications—in 1811. The first school was established in 1812 and soon there were plenty of students interested in learning about farming and other trades here at what became known as "Fremont Academy." In 1837, gold was discovered on the side of a mountain near where today's Fremont sits and started this excitement about mining prospects that would last until the mid 1800s when iron ore came onto the scene from Macedonia Hill all the way upriver into this part of central Ohio. Because it took so long for iron ore to reach marketable levels hereabouts, some folks began thinking it might never happen at all hereabouts; they were wrong! In fact, by 1862 iron production had reached such heights that demand led to increased production (by 1/3) over original plans; by 1870 output stood at $1 million per annum--a level not reached again until World War II! This period during which time various mills turned out flour, nails, munitions etc., has come to be called "the Golden Age"of American industry although much remains unknown about those years due mainly to lack of documentary evidence or preservation efforts! In1875 John Wills opened his grocery store/cafeteria on Market Street between Third Avenue North and Fifth Avenue South serving customers from Euclid Heights eastward including high school students along with blue collar workers on Michigan Ave., among other areas nearby; thus beginning American retail shopping patterns dating back more than half a century! Wills went out into society himself playing bassoon with local bandshells – even appearing regularly with King George III when he toured Cleveland & surrounding counties – promoting agriculture & music while also enjoying socializing with his customers! Today we remember him fondly as one of our own hometown heroes! In 1890 James Fenton purchased farms northwest corner Dayton Road & west side College Road he called "Pleasant Valley". Here he established Fenton Farms supplying produce shipped directly to markets throughout northeast Ohio instead thereof going through Cincinnati or Campbellsburg - both then large cities – especially helpful during hard times!! From these beginnings grew another major employer: Continental Grain Elevated Company making flour ($2 per bushel) for eastern markets before exports replaced grain shipping during World War I; canned goods (sprouts), meat products (poultry), cheese ($2 per pound), eggs ($0.25 per dozen), coffee beans (priced at $1 sterling each)……..and many more items enjoyed by locals & visitors alike since then including arts events like Jazz Festivals.,folk festivals,, car shows,,,, motorcycle rallies,,,, horse races…..Today they are still providing quality food products directto your door…..You can find them online too if you're curious…..
