The first military installation in Fremont was Fort Necessity, which was established in 1812 as part of Captain John Cushing's attempt to secure control over the area around Sandusky River. After being abandoned in 1814, Fort Necessity was re-established in 1825 as part of General Simon Cameron's efforts to gain territory west of the river. In 1830, Ft. Necessity became known as Fort Stevenson after Major James Stevenson erected a fortification on its site. In 1865, Ft. Stevens was renamed Camp Chase after Major General George Hurlbut's victory at Franklin and Templetown Creek against Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest. For the next three decades, Camp Chase served as an important training ground for American troops during the Civil War period. Following the end of World War II, Camp Chase fell into disrepair and was closed down by 1946. It wasn't until 1973 that it reopened as an armory and munitions storage facility called Arsenal Park. From here, it played a significant role in supporting local defense operations through its role in providing ammo for artillery batteries and other weaponry throughout much of central Ohio until it closed down again in 1990s due to budget cuts within the Defense Department. However, since reopening as an armory and munitions storage facility once againit has become one of Fremont's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its unique history and attractions such as its Garrison Museum which tells the story of America’s military Past through exhibits on weapons from various wars throughout history including World War I up to Afghanistan Today! Fremont, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. The name Fremont is derived from the French word for "farmer" and "town". The first Europeans to visit what is now Fremont were fur traders traveling through the area in 1802. In 1836, John C. Frémont explored this area and named it after his friend and mentor, General George A. Smith of Missouri. The first post office in Fremont was established in 1837. The town was incorporated as a village in 1854. After being annexed by Stark County in 1907, Fremont became an unincorporated community again until its annexation by Cleveland on March 1, 1932. Fremont has had a number of industries over the years including engineering companies like Bechtel and Dow Chemical Co., meatpacking companies such as JBS meatpacking Inc., clothiers like Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney Co., printers such as Bexar & Haynes Publishing Company, aluminum manufacturer Alcoa Industries (now known as Alcoa), and steel producer Nucor Corporation (now part of AMD). In 1932 the city of Cleveland took over running the post office and other municipal services from Fremont's incorporation date back to 1854 when it served as an unincorporated community within Stark County without any governing body or elected officials other than local farmers who voted on township resolutions about issues like roads building/maintenance etc.. On March 1st 1932 Cleveland annexed all of Fremont including its original township with same powers/authority except for water rights which are now vested with Cleveland proper
