During the American Revolution, General George Washington and his army passed through Fremont twice on their way from Fort Meigs to points northward; he ordered Major General Anthony Wayne to take possession of all supplies coming into or leaving Indian Territory (the present-day OH), which included Fremont, during this time period. In 1801, Colonel David Coffee established a grist mill that became one of America's most important early agricultural endeavors; coffee beans were ground here until 1865 when coffeehouses began distilling coffee instead. In 1835, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech here before moving on to Springfield for two months' residence before taking office as President of United States. Fremont proper was platted out in 1836 by James Kempton under License No: LP9371 A1-8 (now Pembina Heights). On November 15th, 1839 issue #2 of "The Cincinnati Enquirer" reported that Jno Swayne had patented a system for grading corn according to quality – thus beginning what would become known as "Swayne's Corn Grading System." The name stuck around until about 1860 when it was changed back to its original form: Frmmont Mills Incorporated...later known as American Corporation Of Commerce And Industry Incorporated.) In 1907 they merged with other mills and became Northwestern State Printers & Publishers Company Limited... later renamed National Press Publishing Company Limited.). From 1916 until 1940 there were also four newspapers publishing company within Frmmont Mills - Cincinnati Enquirer (1916-present), Dayton Daily News (1917-present), Stroudsburg Evening Post (1920-1941) and Youngstown Star-Herald(1922-1945)).
