In 1939, the United States Air Force was formed and deployed its first units to South Korea. It wasn't until 1952 that the USAF stationed air forces in its permanent location in Fremont, Ohio. Fremont is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio. It is named after George Fremont, an American politician and general who fought during the War of 1812. The population was 10,362 at the 2000 census. Fremont is located in Shelby County. The first permanent settler in what would become Fremont was James Sinclair in 1800. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of the Scioto River. A few years later, he sold his land to Daniel Boone for $600. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Fremont voted against joining it because they felt that their territory was too large for one state. In 1825, Captain John Sutter founded the city of Sacramento on the site of present-day Fremont. It was quickly renamed Sacramento after Sutter's visit to town in 1826. The first post office was established here in 1830; it was called Stanfordville until 1840 when it changed its name to Fremont due to competition from other towns in that area with similar names such as Dublin and Wooster (now part of Cleveland). During the Civil War, Fremont sided with Confederate States America over Union States America; as a result, many businesses and residents were confiscated by Union forces during the war era. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River, near the newly discovered land that would become Cincinnati. In 1814, Fremont became the capital of Ohio after it was moved from Columbus. The city prospered until the American Revolution caused a decline in activity during the late 1800s. Afterward, Fremont experienced an upswing in population and economic growth thanks to its role as a transportation hub for goods moving between Southern Indiana and Northern Ohio. In 1940, when Cincinnati split from OH, Fremont took over as the capital of Hamilton County.
