The United States Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gift products to Franklin, Ohio Naval Forces Station. The station was founded in 1954 as the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) and became part of the Navy in 1957. It is home to the 9th Fleet, which provides naval forces for operations in the Western Pacific Region. In 1953, AFOTEC’s first shipment of gifts arrived at NAS Franklin, courtesy of then-Secretary of Defense James Fenton. That year, AFOTEC also hosted its first exchange program with Japan. At that time, the Navy operated out of NAS San Diego and USS Arizona was located at NAS Whidbey Island. American visitors were invited to visit Japan’s Makino Peninsula and take pictures from atop a rising hill called “Makino Summit” on their return trip home. In 1960, NAS Franklin played host to America’s first international air show comprised entirely of foreign military aircraft flown by our country’s allies. The event attracted over 1 million spectators from around the world who enjoyed anbird'sflight over NAS Columbus Airport during lunchtime on July 4th! In 1973, we welcomed our fifth floor tenant – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries – with open arms when they moved into their new facility adjacent to our old hangars on Smith Street just east of High Street. From then until their closure in 1986, Mitsubishi produced more than $1 billion worth of naval equipment and hardware here at NAS Franklin! Throughout these years there have been many memorable moments for everyone associated withNAS Franklin: friends old and new; Sailors serving aboard ships engaged in operations all around the Western Pacific; Sailors visiting us not only for festivities but also for essential parts & services; families coming together to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays or graduation ceremonies; local businesses sponsoring events including photo opportunities with Sailors while they are off duty;portationaldiplomacy presents from foreign governments during visits here at Naval Forces Station…the list goes on!

Franklin, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Franklin County. The population was 27,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Franklin were French traders in 1611 during their expeditions up the Great Lakes region. The area was claimed by both France and England as part of Quebec; it passed through hands until 1795, when it was ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris following America's victory in the Revolutionary War. The town site was chosen for its strategic location on high ground between two forks of the Maumee River, which made it easy for early settlers to trade with Native Americans and protect themselves from British attacks. In 1801, General George Washington donated land in what would become Franklin Township to form Mount Vernon National Cemetery (later Arlington National Cemetery). Franklin grew steadily as a commercial center during 19th-century America's "Golden Age" of agriculture and trade. In 1903, construction began on Franklin Park—the first municipally owned park in Ohio—and this led to increased development around town center and along restive riverfront areas that had been traditionally agricultural or undeveloped. By 1920, over 60% of total activity within town limits took place within five blocks of downtown; this extended into nearly every sector imaginable: commerce, services, education, industry (including automobiles), government ( including City Hall), arts and entertainment venues – even a small zoo – all packed into one urban core bounded only by State Street on one side and High Street on the other. By 1990, with rapid growth across all sectors combined – residential density exceeded 500 people per square mile – downtown had become an intense mixture of high-rise buildings dating back centuries with several new skyscrapers under way – plus scores moreresidential buildings coming online every year since then… Today’s Franklins are proud descendents not justof those who built their community but alsoof those who have helped make it thrive over these past 50 years."

This was only one small taste of what would come after during WWII- USS Enterprise would become known as America’s First Envoy Ship because she transported gifts between Japan and America on behalf of her countryman! During WWII, Gifts were often given in order show appreciation for military service and bravery on both sides of the conflict. Numerous medals were awarded throughout war including several prestigious awards such as two Presidential Unit Citations (PUC).
