The Franklin metropolitan area has a population of 1,269,567 and is second in size to Cleveland–Canton combined. Franklin is home to Brown University and The University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. It was named for Benjamin Franklin who served as its first mayor and local magistrate from 1791 to 1795 and as Representative from Pennsylvania in the First Congress from 1793-1797 before moving to Philadelphia where he became an entrepreneur and member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1799-1802 before returning to Ohio in 1812 as governor of that state until his death in 1837 at age 70 years old. Franklin, Ohio is a town in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. Franklin has been called "the heart of the American Revolution" and "a strategic stop on the Underground Railroad." The town was founded by General George Washington in 1792 as a station on the Great Western Road. In 1803, General William Clay moved his headquarters from Cincinnati to what is now Franklin and named it for him. In 1821, General David Brown erected a new courthouse in Franklin which served as the county seat until 1836 when Cleveland became the county seat. After being vacant for several years due to construction of Cleveland's new courthouse, Franklin became the county seat again in 1849 when settlers created an artificial island in Lake Erie to serve that purpose. The town was again renamed for General Washington after he died in 1800 after leading a successful campaign against Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1802-1803, Congress passed an act designating land between Fort Dearborn and Detroit as part of Cook County (later Michigan). This area included most of what is now Franklin Township except for a small section east of Dayton along State Route 507 that became part of Ottawa County. The first settler here was David Brown who built his home on land purchased from Delaware Indians about 1793 or 1794. A second pioneer family came from Lancaster County Pennsylvania about 1800 and cleared much adjoining land including what today forms part of downtown Franklin . They were followed soon thereafter by others driven out by Native American attacks or forced migration . By 1800-1801 there were around sixty families living here with some two hundred acres ( eighty hectares) planted according to Virginia Agricultural Code §2113(a) published on April 12th 1800 under direction of James Robertson Assistant Secretary at War John Armstrong ."As early as 1792 residents had begun moving into this area but only started settling officially until 1830 when General Washington's original station site became available." already well established traders such as Nicholas Herrick opened up trade with natives through their posts near present day Saylorsville while more white settlers began arriving beginning with Captains John Quigley and Ebenezer Morse both coming overland via points west including those near present day Toledo where they traded goods with local Indians before sailing downriver to encounterNative Americans inland
