Franklin, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Columbiana County. The population was 562 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Columbiana County by population. The city is located on the eastern edge of Cleveland metropolitan area, straddling Interstate 80 and Interstate 71. It shares borders with other municipalities to its north and east, including Cuyahoga Falls to the west and Strongsville to the south. The history of Franklin begins with George Washington's first visit there in 1788 as part of his surveying expedition that followed his return from Paris after victory over France in that year. A small settlement had been established by1800 when John Marshall founded Marshallstown on land granted him by General James Wilkinson for $10 per acre (the equivalent of $3,500 at current prices). In 1805, Benjamin Rush founded Rush University in Chicago; this university became Franklin-Dearborn State University in 1931 when it merged with Wayne State University. The town site was selected for its location at an intersection where two main trails crossed: one leading northwest to Detroit and another southeast to Cincinnati; these roads were also important transportation arteries during early years of development. The first post office opened in 1800; during much of the 19th century, Franklin functioned as a trading post between Upper Canada and Pennsylvania Territory due to its strategic location near major rivers. In 1812-13 Ebenezer Howard surveyed what would become Columbus Township while serving as Surveyor General for Lower Michigan Territory under Ulysses S Grant; he named it after himself because he could not find any other towns within 10 miles (16 km) of him which had that name or similar ones。 In 1814-15 David Block built a log cabin on what is now called Clinton Street about ½ mile (1 km) northeast of present day downtown Franklin; this cabin served as headquarters for local Native American traders until being destroyed by Indians about 1840.. In 1830 Mary Anna White purchased 640 acres (248 ha) along the Scioto River from John Snyder for $4 per acre ($2,100 at current prices); this large tract formed Harrisonburg Township which later became part of Columbus Township.. During Reconstruction following America's collapse from slavery following emancipation Missourians came through central Ohio searching for new opportunities while many African Americans were relocated elsewhere.. After Reconstruction most African Americans left central Ohio altogether but some continued living there illegally until 1870s when they were finally deported.. In 1870 James Whelan organized several white men into a group called "The Knights Templar" who planned to overthrow black rule in central Ohio… This failed attempt led to several high profile law enforcement prosecutions against "The Knights Templar" members including arrests made outside Franklin where they performed their secret act OF robbery….. By 1890 most white people living around Columbus had moved away or died off leaving only a few African Americans who continued farming cotton plantations until World War II…. During World War II many citizens volunteered their time or money helping Allied forces fight against Nazi Germany…… Many residents returned home during war years but did not start farm operations again until after 1945…. Today many residents live within walking distance or have satellite TV service
