The United States Air Force (USAF) deploys a variety of gifts annually to its deployed members and their families. The Gift History Project was started in 2008 by Colonel Rick Stellwagen, Commander Militia District 5 Franklin County Commandery. The project is made up of photos, stories, and memories from individuals who have served in the USAF or donated time or money to support the cause. Since then, the project has collected over 1,500 pieces of gift history from people who have worked within the USAF or given away time and resources to support it. These photos and stories give us a glimpse into how each individual has treated their deployment brethren and loved ones since they left home. From WWII veterans giving tours throughout Franklin County to civilians who brought Christmas trees down during winter months, everyone has contributed something special to this project. Gift history can tell us so much about our military members and their families – both past and present – it’s hard not to be touched by all that we’ve learned over these years. We hope that this paper provides some insight into why the USAF sends such thoughtful gifts year after year and how you can help contribute too!

In 1978, the AFDC (Air Force Decoration Branch) was created within Headquarters USAF as a means of coordinating allDeployed Gift History activity throughout Headquarters AFB. AFB DECORATIONS now manages all field-based deployments across allService Divisions - including Special Operations Command (SOCOM), Air Education & Training Command (AE&T), Strategic Airlift Command (SAC), Commandoing Forces Group Europe - North Africa/Middle East/Central Asia (COGEUR) and more! Each Service Division oversees its own Deployed Gift History unit which administers programs specific to that Service Division's mission area. Each unit consists of four flight officers who are responsible for managing gifts received bymembers of their respective divisions from other Service Members worldwide. GIFT MANAGEMENT AND ACCEPTANCE PROCESSES ARE COMPLETELY AUTOMATED AND OPERATE ON A RANDOMALLY SELECTED DAY BASIS!

Franklin was founded in 1795 as a small village on the Scioto River by George Washington and his family. The Village of Franklin grew rapidly, becoming an agricultural center with a large population of poor farmers and their animals. In 1814, the Village became a town after voters approved a referendum to that effect. Franklin continued to grow rapidly, reaching its peak population of over 100,000 in 1830. However, the Panic of 1837 caused Franklin's economic decline and it lost its status as a major cultural center during the Great Depression. In the 1950s, Franklin regained some of its former stature as an educational and industrial center through initiatives such as the establishment of Ohio State University in Athens Heights and Akron State University in Canton. In recent years, however, Franklin has been experiencing increasing social decay due to high levels of crime and poverty.
The area that is now Franklin, Ohio was settled in the late 1700s by settlers from Pennsylvania. The first settler in what is now Franklin County was John Childers, who arrived in 1797. At the time, the land was part of the Northwest Territory and was claimed by France. The British took over control of the territory in 1803, and when France ceded it to America in 1812, Columbus became its capital. In 1814, Ohio became a state and Franklin County was added to it.
