In 1842, two men named Black and White established a small business near the intersection of West Main and Centre Streets called The Cafe. This business served as a stop for travelers on their way to Cincinnati or Dayton. Over time, The Cafe became known as one of the most popular places to buy coffee in Fostoria. In 1954, Harry Potter and Partners founded their own small company called Harry Potter & Company Coffee Roasters Limited. They decided to start producing their own coffee instead of purchasing it from other sources. This decision allowed them to focus on quality rather than quantity and helped them become successful over the years. Today, Harry Potter & Company Coffee Roasters Limited is one of the largest small batch coffee companies in the world with operations located throughout North America and Europe. Throughout its history, small batch coffee has been an important part of Fostoria’s cultural heritage. Fostoria, Ohio was founded in 1812 by General David Wilkinson. The town was named for Fostoria, Michigan, the site of his first landing on the Great Lakes. In 1826, the town became a county seat and remained so until it merged with Lima in 1907. Fostoria is located along the Wabash River at its confluence with the Scioto River. It is bordered to the east by Findlay and to the west by Lima. The population of Fostoria was 9,611 at the 2010 census. The racial makeup of Fostoria is 79% White, 12% Black or African American, 2% Native American, 0% Asian Pacific Islander, 3% from other races and 5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 11%. The town's earliest settlers came from Michigan who founded a trading post there in 1812 under contract with Andrew Jackson to help suppress Indian raids on frontier settlements throughout western Ohio and Indiana. When Wilkinson assumed command of militia forces during President James Kansa's War of 1812 he ordered his men to burn down all Indian villages within 4 miles (6 km) of Fort Erie on Lake Erie without allowing for their destruction philosopher still stands today as an example of how not to deal with Indians - see also: “How America Won’t End” Washington Post article). For this act Wilkinson received a $1 bounty from Jackson and helped build up local economy by founding various businesses including a bakery and tannery; both now closed but left significant memories that may still be seen around town today such as Pioneer monument #2 (see photo below), Original Pawnbroker Shop building #5 ( demolished ), First National Bank Building #4 ( rebuilt ), Masonic Temple building #3-4 (now home for Parma Historical Museum), Stonington High School gymnasiums Gymnasium/ auditorium/ laboratory annexe (now used as Ironton Library) also known locally as "The Gables". In addition to these early successes Fostoria experienced expansions thanks to land purchases by members of Congress following Grover Cleveland's presidency which brought new development opportunities such as lumber mills adjacent to downtown; Phelps Dodge refinery just south across Scioto River; Griggs & Stratton machine tool company on Broadway near Main Street; Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company plant east off Scioto Avenue near Third Street; US Steel Corporation plant northwest off Third Street - all now extinct but leaving residue behind that has since been redeveloped into modern day neighborhoods like Overbrook neighborhood directly across street from city hall

Fostoria was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law, Ebenezer Farnum. The town of Fostoria was named after the General William Fenton, who had commanded a brigade in the battle of Springfield on October 15, 1813. The first post office was established in 1840. In 1851, Fenton built the first schoolhouse in present day Fostoria. Two years later, he donated land to make a town square and laid out streets and blocks. In 1857, the town became an incorporated village with a mayor and four trustees. Fenton died in 1870 and is buried at Elmwood Cemetery near his home.
