Fostoria is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1815, an act of Congress designated Fostoria "the seat of government for all Ohio" which made it an important trading center between East Tennessee and Kentucky following the War of 1812. In 1830s coal mining became significant in Fostoria and began producing electricity from waste heat from mines that produced coal tarred with sulphuric acid (a process still used today). This led to large improvements in water supply and heating during prohibition era due to increased demand for both services by businesses and citizens alike as well as Generating Station No 1 which powered lights throughout downtown Akron during prohibition period
