Fostoria, Ohio is a town in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1836 and named for Fostoria Township in Centre County. It post office was established in 1839. The first permanent settler on the site of present-day Fostoria was James Henshaw, who arrived in 1836 from Virginia with his family. His son John also settled there around 1840. In 1849, David Cranch moved to Fostoria from Sylvania Township in Steuben County and became its first mayor. He served two terms until his death in 1865. Fostoria's early growth followed a pattern typical of many small towns during the 1830s and 1840s: it consisted mainly of farmers who grew corn and other vegetables for their own consumption or sale; few residents bought land to build homes; and schools were not established until after 1850. However, by 1860 increasing numbers of residents had purchased land east of the Scioto River – what is now downtown Fostoriya – making it an attractive location for businesses and development (this area would eventually become known as "the business district"). In 1880, William Ladd erected a sawmill on the Scioto River near present-day Uniontown; this began commercial production of lumber here that continues to this day. By 1890, over 100 businesses had been operating in downtown Fostoria (including several banks), accounting for more than 75% of all economic activity hereabouts (although manufacturing still accounted for most jobs). By 1916 nearly all storefronts had been destroyed by fire resulting from an accidental spark while firefighters were dousing a building that had caught fire due to faulty wiring; however, some stores reopened within weeks thanks to donations from local citizens. This period marked oneof great prosperity for downtown Fostoria during which new buildings were erected along Main Street including four churches (twoMethodist and two Baptist) as well as numerous blacksmith shops and grocery stores; moreover, streetcar service arrived soon after allowing businessmen access to larger areas outside the town limits without having to travel down Broad Street or go through yards full of stumps! In addition, many civic organizations were formed during this time including the First Methodist Church Ladies Auxiliary Club which helped care for sick children during World War I; Mothers' Brigade which provided meals to needy families during WWII; local artists produced art posters/childswalks funded by local parents) Bicycles were also very popular then because there wasn't much traffic on Broad Street so people could explore everything around them!
