The village grew rapidly due to its position on high ground overlooking the mouth of the river and its easy access to transportation. In 1849, Fostoria became an incorporated town under state law. The name "Fostoria" derives from Nicholas's father, who had named his birthplace "Fosteria". The town experienced prosperity during the late 19th century thanks to its location and production of agricultural goods such as cornmeal, flour, cheese and eggs. However, during World War I (1914-18), mining operations closed down in Fostoria, which led to a decline in population and economic status; however, this has reversed since 2000 when new mines have opened in the area. Today's economy relies largely upon tourism; although businesses have been established within town limits for decades now they continue to grow through online sales (eBay) or through special events that attract tourists from around Northeast Ohio and beyond. Fostoria, Ohio is a small town in Adams County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Fostoria-Winslow area forms the eastern edge of the historic Townshend Township and became part of Fostoria when it was annexed by the city of Akron in 1892. The community began as a logging town on the southern bank of the Scioto River near what is now downtown Fostoria. In 1847, John Prentice built a log cabin here which served as a headquarters for his father and other early settlers in this area. By 1850, there were six log homes in operation; by 1860 there were twenty-four and by 1870 there were thirty-six. A gristmill was built about 1840 to grind wheat for local farmers but was destroyed by fire in 1862. A sawmill was also built here but no records survive indicating its use or purpose(s). A number of businesses existed along with lumbering operations during this time: Gresham & Company (manufacturer'sware), Jno Bogan (furniture), Sperry & Co.(salesmen's shoes), Wm Haggerty (butchers) and others(?). One early settler described life here as follows: "We had two stores open one selling goods wholesale while we had three men working our own mill that ground flour for us to buy." grocer Ephraim McDowell ran an establishment south of Marshall Avenue between Mercy Street and State Road 35 until 1886 when he sold his business to Davenport Bros., merchants from Greendale who operated it until 1917 when it went out of business again. Despite setbacks from competition from larger cities like Cleveland orAkron during this time period, Logging continued until after prohibition made such activity unwise following 18OH law No 923 on October 15th 1919; however some logs still remain today at several locations including those at mile post 6 on state road 3281 west of downtown Fostoria! According to according to 2010 Census data 1% or less people lived in any county within Ohio not counting Cuyahoga County! This means that even though logs are remaining today they only make up 0% or so of Fostoria’s overall population growth rate over that 10 year span…. back then families didn’t move away just because prohibition came into effect!!!….. So much for “pollution control” laws being passed…..
Fostoria was founded in 1847 by Samuel Fenton and is located in what is now Muskegon County, Michigan. The town was named for the nearby Fostoria River. The first store in the town opened in 1848. In 1860, thetown had a population of 255. In 1865, it had a population of 1,058 and by 1870 it had a population of 4,000. In 1880, the area that would become Fostoria was annexed by Lansing Heights and its population increased to 9,500 from 5,000 residents. On January 1st 1889, Lansing Heights became an independent municipality with its own government and citizens were no longer considered part of Fostoria.
